I finally made it to Lodge Sixty Six near St Columb Major after what felt like the scenic route from hell. I'd driven down from Bristol, buzzing with excitement for a cheeky three-day escape in Cornwall, but somewhere around Bodmin Moor, my sat-nav decided to throw a wobbly. "Recalculating," it chirped cheerfully as it directed me down a narrow lane that narrowed into a single-track horror show, complete with hedgerows brushing the wing mirrors and a sheep giving me the evil eye. In my panic to reverse, I clipped a verge, splattering mud up the side of my hire car like I'd auditioned for a rally. Brilliant start, eh? Back at the lodge, we fired up the BBQ in the private garden (surrounded by buzzing wildflowers), grilling fresh mackerel from the local fishmonger. Sat there under the stars, pint in hand, I had a quiet moment of self-reflection: life's too short for perfect journeys. Sometimes the mud-splattered arrivals make the warm welcomes all the sweeter.
