About Cornwall
Pulling into Retallack just as the sun dipped low over the clay pits—those iconic white chimneys you spot from afar—felt like stumbling on a secret. Lodge 27 is this cosy cedar-clad pod, tucked amid lush greenery, with a hot tub bubbling away like it knew I was knackered. First impressions? Bliss. It's got that perfect Scandi vibe—woodburner crackling (even in summer, because Cornwall weather is fickle), a telly bigger than my flatmate's ego, and a kitchen stocked with posh tea and a Nespresso that whispered "welcome" with its first frothy cappuccino. Stepping inside, the panoramic windows framed the rolling fields, and I thought, "Right, this is where I unplug." But honestly, the real magic kicked off when I ditched the satnav and embraced getting lost—properly, gloriously lost. Cornwall's got this knack for hiding gems if you veer off the tourist trail, and Retallack's spot, just a hop from St Columb, is perfect for it. Day one, post-check-in, I fancied a wander. Instead of the obvious caravan park paths, I nipped out the back gate onto a skinny lane that Google Maps swore didn't exist. Ten minutes in, I'm knee-deep in a wildflower meadow, buzzing bees and all, leading to a forgotten dew pond where cows were having a right old chinwag. Sat there with a flask of tea, watching dragonflies skim the water—pure poetry. Who needs beaches when you've got this? Next morning, hot tub soak first (obviously—those jets kneaded out the drive's kinks like a pro), then off on foot again, no plan. A wrong turn down a hedge-lined track spat me out at the edge of a clay pit lagoon, one of those off-the-beaten-path Retallack hideaways where the water's this unearthly turquoise from the china clay. No crowds, just me, a heron, and the squelch of mud underfoot. I picnicked on pasties from the resort's bakery—flaky, proper Cornish, stuffed with steak and swede—and pondered how daft it is that we chase Instagram spots when these accidental finds hit harder. Light humour in the self-reflection there: me, the city lad, realising my best holidays come from binning the itinerary and letting the lanes lead. Afternoon brought another serendipitous detour—a bridleway I clocked from the lodge deck that wound through ancient oak woods to a tumbling stream. Dappled light, mossy rocks perfect for paddling (brr, but invigorating), and not a soul in sight. I lost two hours there, skipping stones and eavesdropping on birdsong, feeling that gentle tug of reflection: life's too short for signposted paths; the detours build the stories. Back at Lodge 27 by dusk, firing up the BBQ with local sausages from the farm shop five minutes away, hot tub steaming under stars—first impressions sealed as five-star serendipity. By evening two, I'd mapped my own mental atlas of these hidden Cornish pockets, all within a stone's throw, proving you don't need to roam far for wonder. Lodge 27 isn't just a stay; it's a launchpad for the joyful muddle of getting lost. If you're Cornwall-bound, pack sturdy boots, switch off the phone, and let the magic unfold. Cheers to that. |
