About Cornwall
I finally made it to Little Orchard Lodge near Truro after what felt like the scenic route from hell—well, not hell exactly, just a cheeky little detour involving a wrong turn onto a single-track lane that had me convinced we'd end up in a cow field. Picture this: me, my wife Sarah, and our two lads, Finn (8) and Theo (5), crammed in the car with pasties from a service station, the satnav chirping away like it had a personal grudge. We'd set off from Bristol full of beans, dreaming of that proper Cornish getaway, but about 20 minutes from Truro, I missed a sign for the A39 and plunged us into hedge-lined chaos. "Dad, are we lost forever?" Theo piped up from the back, munching crumbs everywhere. I laughed it off—classic me, turning a 10-minute jaunt into an hour-long adventure—but secretly I was sweating. Still, we rolled up to the lodge just as the sun dipped low over the Fal estuary, and blimey, was it worth the faff.

Pulling into the drive, I was gobsmacked. Little Orchard Lodge is one of those proper cosy hides—think chocolate-box cottage tucked in a quiet spot near glowing orchards, with the kind of rustic charm that screams "relax, you've earned this". It's part of a small cluster, but ours felt like our own private nook, all stone walls and thatched vibes, with a cheeky wood-burner peeking through the window. We tumbled out, bags flying, and Sarah unlocked the door to a waft of fresh bread and logs—proper welcoming touch. Inside, it was pure lodge life magic: low beams you have to duck (I did, twice, earning a giggle from the boys), a squishy sofa begging for family sprawls, and a kitchen that looked ready for pasty-making marathons. Finn immediately claimed the mezzanine bunk area upstairs, whooping as he dragged his pillow fort supplies up the wonky wooden stairs. "This is better than home!" he declared, while Theo discovered a basket of local treats—scones, clotted cream, the works. Chaos ensued as we unpacked; Theo knocked over a jug of milk (welcome to family holidays), but no harm done, just a quick wipe and a shared eye-roll with Sarah.

First impressions? Blissfully unpretentious. We cracked open a bottle of Cornish cider from the sideboard—sharp and fizzy, just right—and fired up the wood-burner as dusk settled. The garden wrapped around us like a hug, with apple trees heavy with fruit and views peeking towards the River Fal, all twinkly in the evening light. No grand sea cliffs here (we're keeping it local), just that gentle Cornish inland peace, maybe a mile or two from Truro's buzz. We played garden footie till the boys were knackered, me pretending not to let them win, Sarah snapping pics of the lads clambering on the swing seat. Dinner was simple joys: cream tea devoured on the patio, crumbs everywhere, followed by a cheesy pasta thrown together in the Aga-wannabe oven. Laughter bounced off the walls as Finn recounted my driving blunder in epic detail—"Dad drove into Narnia!"—and I couldn't help but chuckle along.

Stepping back for a mo, as the flames crackled and the boys conked out early, I had one of those quiet moments. You know, the kind where you realise life's mad rush back home fades here in this little lodge bubble. No screens, no schedules—just us, a bit of chaos, and the soft hum of Cornwall outside. Sarah caught my eye over her cider, and we both grinned. This was it: the simple pleasure of arriving somewhere that feels like slipping into your favourite jumper. First evening in, and already I knew three days here would recharge the batteries proper. Can't wait to see what tomorrow brings, but honestly, this arrival? Spot on.
