About Cornwall
I finally made it to Leven, that cosy little stone cottage tucked away in the hills above Redruth, after a drive from Bristol that was equal parts scenic and sodding infuriating. Picture this: I'm humming along the A30, past Bodmin Moor with its wild ponies eyeing me like I'm the intruder, when—bam—a rogue seagull decides my windscreen needs a fresh coat of paint. Proper Jackson Pollock job, it was, right in the middle of a downpour. I pull over at some services near the Cornish border, scrubbing away with a soggy tissue, muttering about how even the birds have it in for me. Laughable now, but at the time, I was picturing a holiday ruined before it started. Fifteen minutes later, though, the sun cracked through, and Cornwall's magic kicked in—those rolling green hills dotted with granite cottages, the air thick with salt and promise.

Pulling up to Leven felt like stumbling on a secret. It's one of those off-the-beaten-track gems you don't find on the tourist apps: a traditional miner's cottage, all rugged stone walls and slate roof, nestled in a quiet hamlet just outside Redruth. No neon signs or coach parties here—just the hum of bees and the distant bleat of sheep. I parked on the gravel drive, grabbed my bags, and stepped inside to a world of low wooden beams, a wood-burner begging for a fire, and a kitchen that screamed "proper cuppa time." First impressions? Blissfully unpretentious. The views from the lounge window stretched over patchwork fields towards the unseen sea, and I could already imagine evenings with a pint, feet up, watching the light fade.

But the real joy of Leven hit when I ditched the satnav and embraced getting lost—properly, gloriously lost. On that first afternoon, fancying a wander, I followed a whim down a single-track lane that Google Maps swore didn't exist. It spat me out at a hidden cove I'd never heard of, a pebbly beach cradled by jagged cliffs, where the waves crashed like they were auditioning for a pirate film. No one else around, just me, a thermos of tea, and a family of seals barking hellos from the rocks. I sat there gobsmacked, realising how Cornwall's best bits are the ones you trip over by accident—the secret swims and smugglers' paths that locals guard like treasure.

Day two, I veered off again, chasing a "public footpath" sign half-hidden by brambles. It led through ancient woodland, all dripping ferns and mossy boulders, emerging at a forgotten tidal pool near the coast path. Crystal clear, warmed by the sun, it was my private spa—diving in with a whoop, pretending I was Robinson Crusoe. Bloody brilliant, and not a soul in sight. Back at Leven, I dried off by the Aga, chuckling at how my "holiday plan" had dissolved into happy chaos. These accidental finds beat any itinerary; they're the heartbeat of Cornwall, raw and unpolished.

By the third morning, as I sipped coffee on the patio overlooking the misty valley, I had a quiet moment of reflection. Here I was, miles from the pasty shops and Minack Theatre crowds, in this unassuming haven that rewarded my wandering soul. Life's too short for sticking to the main roads, isn't it? Leven taught me that—the thrill of the unknown, the simple pleasure of a wrong turn leading to right. If you're after Cornwall's true hidden gems, pack light, switch off the phone, and let the lanes lead you. I left with a full heart and a promise to return, seagull splats be damned.
