About Cornwall
I finally made it to La Folie after a bit of a faff on the drive down from Devon. Picture this: I'd packed the car with enough books, crisps, and tea bags to last a siege, only for the sat-nav to chuck a wobbly just outside Fowey. It insisted on sending me down a narrow lane that was more goat track than road, complete with a cheeky cow blocking the way, staring at me like I'd gatecrashed her picnic. A quick reverse manoeuvre (with much swearing under my breath) and I was back on track, pulling up to this gorgeous little haven tucked away in Polruan, right on the edge of Cornwall's wild beauty.

Stepping through the gate at La Folie felt like slipping into a secret world. It's one of those proper cosy lodges – think whitewashed walls, a thatched roof nodding to old smuggling tales, and a garden that spills down towards the Fal estuary like it's too lazy to climb back up. I dumped my bags in the lounge, with its squishy sofas begging for a collapse, and immediately cracked open a window to let in that salty sea air. First impressions? Bliss. No frantic itineraries, no rushing about – just the joy of doing bugger all, and loving every minute.

That first afternoon, I wandered the garden paths, past hydrangeas the size of dustbin lids (Cornwall does them proud) and little nooks perfect for hiding away. I plonked myself in a hammock with a mug of builder's tea and my latest Poldark novel – yes, I know, clichéd for these parts, but who cares? The gentle lap of the water below and the odd seagull squawk were my soundtrack. It's funny how, after the drive's minor drama, my shoulders unclenched. No need to conquer the coast path or tick off cream teas; this was about slowing right down.

Evening rolled in soft and golden, so I ambled a short stroll to Polruan – all of five minutes away, past boats bobbing in the harbour. Picked up fresh pasties from the village shop (proper ones, with chunky beef and a flaky crust that crumbles everywhere), and a bottle of local cider that tasted like it was squeezed from the orchards that morning. Back at the lodge, I lit the wood burner – even though it wasn't that chilly – because why not? Cosied up with my feast, feet up, watching the light fade over the estuary. The views from the terrace are crackers: ferries chugging to Fowey, seals popping up like nosy neighbours. I chuckled to myself, thinking how I'd once crammed holidays full of 'must-sees'. What a mug.

Day two dawned misty, perfect for more loafing. Breakfast was lazy – scrambled eggs on toast, eaten in the sun-trap conservatory while flicking through a dog-eared Ordnance Survey map, plotting nowt but daydreams. I spent hours in the garden, pruning a rogue lavender bush (gardener's hat on, naturally), then flopping into a lounger with headphones for a podcast on Cornish myths. Smugglers, shipwrecks, the lot – all while the world slowed to a crawl. A gentle wander along the nearby coastal path stretched my legs without effort; wildflowers nodding in the breeze, the sea a shimmering tease below. Back for tea – scones nabbed from Fowey's bakery via the short ferry hop – slathered in jam and clotted cream, devoured in the arbour like a contented hobbit.

By the third morning, reflection hit me gently over coffee on the patio. Life's rush had melted away; La Folie works its magic by whispering 'stay put'. No grand adventures, just the sheer delight of a slow Cornish breath – reading till eyelids droop, garden pottering, estuary gazing. That cow on the lane? Best mishap ever; it led me here to this perfect pause. If you're after recharging without the rigmarole, book it. You'll thank me when you're doing sweet FA, grinning like a fool.
