About Cornwall
I finally made it to Kynance after what felt like the scenic route from hell, though in Cornwall, that's basically every route. We'd piled into the car in Redruth that drizzly Friday afternoon, me, the wife, and our two lads aged eight and ten, all buzzing for a three-day escape in this cosy little lodge. The satnav had other ideas, though – decided to send us down a single-track lane that narrowed into a proper hedge-lined tunnel. I clipped the wing mirror on a rogue blackthorn bush, nothing major, just enough to elicit a chorus of "Dad, you're rubbish at driving!" from the back seat. Laughed it off as we emerged scratched but alive, pulling up to Kynance just as the sun peeked through the clouds like it was apologising for the weather.

First impressions? Blimey, it was love at first sight. Tucked away in a peaceful spot near Redruth, this wooden lodge felt like stepping into a hug from the Cornish countryside. The veranda wrapped around it like a welcome mat, with those classic lodgey deck chairs begging for a sit-down. We tumbled out of the car, bags everywhere, and the boys immediately dashed to the hot tub – yeah, it has one, bubbling away like it knew we'd need it after that drive. I stood there for a mo, breathing in that salty, earthy air, thinking how mad it is that you can feel this unplugged just 20 minutes from the A30.

Inside, it was all warm wood panels and that faint scent of pine that screams "holiday mode activated." The open-plan living area had a proper wood-burning stove (we didn't light it yet, saving that for evening cosiness), a squishy corner sofa piled with cushions, and a telly that we ignored in favour of the view through the big windows – rolling fields dotted with sheep, and in the distance, the faint hum of the coast. Kitchen was a dream for lazy cooks like me: fully kitted with everything from a Nespresso machine (hero) to a dishwasher, so no one's doing pots on holiday. I cracked open a tin of pasties from the local shop en route – Trevaskis Farm Shop vibes, all flaky pastry and proper filling – and we devoured them on the veranda as the sun dipped low.

The bedrooms were spot on for family chaos. Ours had a king-sized bed that swallowed you whole, and the lads shared a twin with bunks that had them giggling like loons before lights out. "This is better than home!" one declared, which stung a bit but hey, truth hurts. We unpacked amid the usual lodge-life pandemonium – socks in the fridge by accident, wellies kicked off in the hall leaving a trail of sand (where from? No idea, Cornwall magic). That first evening, we fired up the BBQ on the deck – nothing fancy, just sausages from the nearby butcher and some local cider – while the hot tub steamed invitingly. The boys splashed about, turning it into a pirate ship battle, drenching me in the process. "Oi, that's my pint!" I yelled, half-heartedly, loving every sopping second.

As night fell, we cranked the fire pit (another gem), toasting marshmallows till they were gooey disasters. Sat there under a sky prickled with stars, no light pollution to spoil it, and I had one of those quiet moments – you know, the self-reflective ones where you realise life's too short not to chase these simple joys. Work stress? Forgotten. The mirror scrape? Hilarious anecdote now. Kynance wasn't some posh pile; it was proper, unpretentious bliss, the kind of place that wraps you in lodge life and doesn't let go. First impressions sealed it: this was our Cornwall haven, mishaps and all. Can't wait to see what the next days bring, but right now, this is perfection.
