About Cornwall
Pulling up to Jasmine Lodge 3 just before dusk was pure magic, though. Tucked in a quiet spot near St Austell, it's one of those pet-friendly lodges that screams "cosy family hideaway" – wooden cladding, a cheeky hot tub bubbling away like it knew we'd need it, and a garden that backs onto nothing but green fields. We'd booked for a three-day breather, but honestly, from that first gravel crunch under the tyres, I knew arrival day was going to steal the show. The kids – Mia, 8, and little Tom, 5 – tumbled out like puppies, screeching about the swing set before I'd even turned off the engine. Chaos level: instant. Stepping inside was like being hugged by a Rayburn stove. The open-plan living space is compact but spot-on for lodge life – squishy sofas piled with cushions, a telly begging for kids' shows, and a kitchen that's kitted out with everything from cafetière to toaster. No faffing about with dodgy Airbnb appliances here; I rustled up tea and biccies in two ticks while the other half wrestled the suitcases. First impressions? It's got that lived-in charm without the tip – think Farrow and Ball neutrals on the walls, a wood burner ready for a cheeky evening blaze, and those big windows framing the Cornish twilight. We could just make out the Eden Project's domes glowing in the distance, not five miles off, but who needs plans when you've got this? The bedrooms sealed the deal. Ours was a snug double with an en-suite that had proper hot water pressure – bliss after the drive. The kids' room? Bunk beds that turned bedtime into a comedy goldmine. Tom clambered up like a monkey on caffeine, only to get his foot tangled in the duvet, resulting in a pillow fight that nearly took out the lamp. "Mum, this is better than home!" Mia declared, diving under the covers. I chuckled, but there was a quiet moment later, sipping tea on the decking as the sun dipped, watching them conk out. Meant to be scrolling emails, I just sat there, mug steaming, thinking how these simple setups remind you what's important. No grand adventures yet, just us, a lodge that fits like an old favourite jumper, and that rare family calm before the storm of sandcastles tomorrow. Dinner was a right laugh – fish fingers from the freezer drawer (stocked with basics, bless it), chucked in the oven while we unpacked. The hot tub called, but with kids hyped on sea air, we opted for board games instead. Monopoly turned into a riot when Tom bankrupted us all with fake hotels on Park Lane, his gleeful cackles echoing off the beams. It's the little lodge-life pandemonium that gets you: spilling crisps on the rug, the faint whiff of past guests' pasties, that first-night thrill of "this is ours for three days." By lights-out, I was knackered but grinning. Jasmine Lodge 3 isn't flashy – no infinity pools or Michelin menus – but it's Cornwall distilled: unpretentious, welcoming, with just enough wiggle room for family mayhem. First impressions? Hooked already. Can't wait to wake to birdsong and brekkie plans. This is proper holiday gold. |
