About Cornwall
Stepping inside for the first time was pure bliss. The place is a proper cosy haven: low-beamed ceilings in the lounge, a wood burner begging to be lit (though it was still summer, mind), and a kitchen stocked with everything you'd need for a fry-up. Upstairs, the bedrooms had those fluffy duvets and views over rolling fields dotted with sleepy cows. I dumped my bags, brewed a massive cuppa, and plonked myself on the sofa, thinking, "Right, this is the life." First impressions? Spot on. It's the sort of spot that makes you exhale and forget the rat race back home. But Cornwall doesn't do "sit still," does it? I was itching to explore on foot, lacing up my boots for what I hoped would be epic coastal hikes. Day one dawned with blue skies – rare as hen's teeth here – so I headed out for a brisk five-mile loop around the local lanes and fields. Highfield Barton's tucked away in prime walking country, with public footpaths snaking off into the countryside. I tramped past ancient hedgerows buzzing with bees, wildflowers nodding in the breeze, and the odd buzzard circling overhead. The paths dipped into little valleys, misty with the scent of gorse and bracken. Humour kicked in when I nearly twisted my ankle on a sneaky rabbit hole – "Graceful as a giraffe on ice," I muttered, laughing at myself while snapping pics of the granite-strewn moors that scream proper Cornish wilderness. By afternoon, though, the weather turned on a dime, as it does. One minute I'm basking in sunshine on a clifftop stroll towards the North Cliffs – those rugged bluffs just a couple of miles off, with waves crashing below – and the next, it's lashing down with horizontal rain. Plans for a full coastal bash to Godrevy Lighthouse? Scrubbed. Instead, I dashed back to the cottage, soaked to the skin, giggling at how I looked like a drowned rat. Highfield Barton's garden became my new adventure zone – sheltered nooks under the apple trees, where I paced muddy paths in my wellies, dodging puddles bigger than paddling pools. The British weather's a right joker, forcing you to improvise, and I loved it. That evening, as the clouds lifted for a dramatic sunset painting the fields gold, I sat with a pint of local Tribute ale, reflecting gently on it all. Here I was, a city lad who's spent too long glued to screens, suddenly tuned into the rhythm of rain and wind, paths and panoramas. Highfield Barton wasn't just a base; it was a gentle nudge to slow down, let the weather lead the way. My three days kicked off with mishaps and magic – and I couldn't wait for more. If you're after a walkers' paradise where the elements keep you on your toes, this is your spot. Book it, boots at the ready. |
