About Cornwall
I finally made it to High Tide, that gorgeous little cottage tucked away in St Minver, after a drive from Wadebridge that was equal parts scenic and sodding infuriating. Picture this: I'd set off buzzing with excitement for my three-day Cornish escape, past those classic rolling fields dotted with cream teas signs, when—bam—my sat-nav decided to throw a wobbly. It rerouted me down a single-track lane narrower than my patience, complete with a rogue cow blocking the way. I sat there, engine idling, chuckling to myself as the beast eyed me like I was the intruder. A classic Cornwall welcome, innit? Fifteen minutes of gentle beeping and reverse manoeuvres later, I emerged, slightly windswept but grinning, right onto the spot-on Polzeath road. High Tide appeared like a hidden gem itself—whitewashed walls, a cheeky blue door, and sea glimpses winking through the garden hedge. First impressions? Pure bliss. It felt like stumbling upon a mate's secret bolthole, not some glossy rental.

Stepping inside, I was hit with that instant "ahh" of coastal charm: low-beamed ceilings, a wood-burner begging for a lazy evening (though it was balmy July), and a kitchen stocked with proper tea towels and a retro kettle. The living room windows framed the sort of view that makes you forget the cow fiasco—wild clifftops rolling towards the Atlantic. But honestly, the real magic kicked off when I ditched the A-roads and let curiosity lead. Cornwall's got this knack for rewarding the wanderer, especially round here in St Minver's quiet folds. No tourist traps for me; I was all about those accidental detours, the off-the-beaten-path spots you only find by getting gloriously lost.

My first wander was a total fluke. Instead of heading straight to Polzeath's surfer buzz (just a mile away, mind), I veered off down a unmarked bridleway from the cottage garden gate. Ten minutes of brambly bliss later, I popped out at Daymer Bay's secret northern edge—a tucked-away cove where the sand's so white it hurts, and the waves whisper rather than crash. Not a soul in sight, bar a couple of seals bobbing offshore like nosy neighbours. I plonked down with a pasty from the village shop (Daymer Post Office does the flakiest, cheapest ones going), toes in the surf, feeling like I'd nicked Narnia. Light humour in the mishap? Yeah, when a cheeky gull dive-bombed my lunch—proper Hitchcock moment. I waved it off, laughing; that's the joy of these hidden corners, innit? No crowds to judge your seagull skirmishes.

Next morning, still buzzing from that first-night cuppa on High Tide's sunny patio, I "accidentally" missed the turn for Pentire Point and ended up on the Pentireglaze Haven trail. Bloody marvellous serendipity. This wee path snakes through gorse and thrift, dropping you to a sheltered beach that's more rockpool paradise than postcard perfection. I spent hours poking about, discovering mini ecosystems—crabs scuttling, anemones waving like underwater fans. It's the sort of spot locals keep schtum about, five minutes from the cottage but worlds away from the Instagram hordes at Polzeath. Reflected on it later, supping tea in the cottage's snug: life's too short for maps sometimes. That gentle nudge to get lost? It's what recharges the soul, reminds you there's magic in the unplanned. No grand adventures needed; just Cornwall's quiet pull.

By day two's end, looping back via St Minver's leafy churchyard (stumbled on a hidden wildflower meadow there—bees in overdrive), High Tide felt like home. First impressions sealed: it's the perfect launchpad for these serendipitous jaunts. If you're after Cornwall's true hidden gems, ditch the guidebook, embrace the wrong turn, and let places like this whisper their secrets. Pure, unfiltered joy.
