About Cornwall
I finally made it to Harbour Premier Lodge in Cornwall after a bit of a faff on the drive down from up country. Picture this: I'd packed the car with enough pasties and clotted cream to sink a ship, only for the sat-nav to chuck a wobbly just past Truro, directing me down a one-lane track that dead-ended at a field full of suspiciously judgemental cows. Twenty minutes of reversing with hedges scraping the mirrors later, I emerged, slightly frazzled but laughing at my own daftness, pulling into the lodge's drive as the sun dipped low over the Helford River. It was day one of my three-day jaunt, and already Cornwall was reminding me not to take myself too seriously.

Harbour Premier Lodge is one of those cracking little gems tucked away in Helston – proper cosy, with its wood-beamed ceilings, patio overlooking the water, and that fresh sea-air waft sneaking in every time you open a window. First impressions? Bliss. I dumped my bags, cracked open a tin of local ale from the fridge (cheers to the welcome pack), and just soaked it in. No chain-hotel vibes here; it's like stumbling into a mate's posh fisherman’s cottage, all shipshape and ship-inspired with nautical nods everywhere. The hot tub on the deck was calling my name, but I figured I'd earn it with a wander first. Little did I know, that's when the real magic kicked off – the hidden Cornwall you only find when you ditch the map and let your feet lead.

Wandering out from the lodge, I aimed for Porthleven – all of five minutes' drive, but I parked up and legged it along the coastal path instead, keen to get properly lost. Cornwall's like that, innit? You think you're heading for the obvious spots, but one wrong turn (or deliberate detour) and bam, you're in paradise. First hidden gem: a tiny pebble beach just shy of the harbour, wedged between sheer cliffs you wouldn't spot unless you veered off the main path. I clambered down via some dodgy steps overgrown with ferns, nearly twisting an ankle on a rogue rock – classic me, all enthusiasm and zero grace. But crikey, the reward! Crystal water lapping at black basalt boulders, seals bobbing about like nosy neighbours, and not a soul in sight. I sat there with a flask of tea, watching gulls dive-bomb fish, feeling that gentle pang of reflection: when's the last time I switched off like this? Work's been a right grind; this was my reset button.

Emboldened, I pushed on, scrambling along the cliffs towards Loe Bar – that massive shingle spit guarding the serene Loe Pool inland. It's off-the-beaten-track heaven, especially if you skirt the inland side where reed beds rustle and kingfishers dart like blue bullets. I got properly disoriented in the dunes, phone signal be damned, and stumbled on a wild swimming cove locals must keep secret. Freezing as a witch's tit, but I dunked in anyway, emerging whooping and alive. Light humour in the horror of my blue lips later, towelling off on the lodge patio as the sun set pink over the harbour.

Back at Harbour Premier, the first evening wrapped up perfectly: wood-burner crackling, fish and chips from Porthleven's harbourside (greasy, glorious, gone in seconds), and that hot tub bubbling under stars. No grand plans for days two and three yet – just more aimless rambles from this ace base, chasing whatever accidental wonders Cornwall chucks my way. If you're after proper escapism, ditch the tourist traps; Harbour Premier Lodge is your launchpad to the county's best-kept secrets. I'm hooked – next time, I'm bringing mates to share the mishaps.
