About Cornwall
I finally made it to Flow Roundhouse near Bude after what felt like the scenic route from hell – or at least from the M5, which in Cornwall terms is basically the same thing. Picture this: I'd packed the car with enough pasties and clotted cream to feed a small army, blasted some proper Cornish sea shanties on the stereo, and set off full of beans for my three-day jaunt. But no, about 20 minutes from Bude, I managed to take a wrong turn down a single-track lane that was more hedge than road. Cue me wrestling with a reversing manoeuvre worthy of a Top Gear reject, branches scratching the paintwork like they had a personal grudge, all while swearing at the satnav that had clearly gone rogue. "Recalculating," it chirped cheerily, as if it hadn't just led me into a leafy ambush. By the time I extricated myself – with a sheepish wave to a local farmer who looked like he'd seen it all before – I was half an hour late, flustered, and questioning my life choices.

Pulling up to Flow Roundhouse in East Thorne, though, all that arrival chaos melted away like fudge in the sun. Tucked into a peaceful spot just a hop from Bude's beaches, this quirky roundhouse is the stuff of eco-dreams, all curved timber and thatched roof blending into the Cornish countryside like it grew there. I parked on the gravel drive, grabbed my bags, and stepped inside, hit instantly by this warm, woody embrace. The open-plan living space is a corker – vaulted ceiling with a skylight flooding the place with that soft North Cornwall light, a cracking wood burner begging for a fire later, and a kitchen that's kitted out proper: Belfast sink, Aga vibes, and all the gadgets you need without it feeling soulless.

First impressions? Blimey, it's cosier than my nan's front room. I dumped my stuff and flopped onto the plush sofa, which is positioned just right to gaze out at the garden rolling down towards distant fields. There's a private hot tub out the back – yes, really – steaming gently under a pergola, surrounded by lavender and wildflowers that screamed "relax, you daft sod." I couldn't resist dipping a toe in straight away; the water was perfect, bubbling away my road rage like magic. Laughing to myself, I thought back to that hedge scrap – what a plonker I am, turning a 10-minute drive into a comedy of errors. But honestly, it made arriving here feel even sweeter, like the universe's way of saying, "Earn your bliss, mate."

Wandering the compact but brilliant layout, I clocked the king-size bed up in the loft, all draped in crisp linens with views over the treetops – no creaky stairs or draughty corners here, just pure comfort. Downstairs, the rainfall shower in the en-suite was calling my name after the drive's sweat-fest; I hopped in and let the hot water wash away the last of the grit. Emerging squeaky clean, I cracked open a tin of local Doom Bar from the fridge (stocked with Cornwall's finest, naturally) and toasted my new temporary home. The whole place has this effortless charm – solar panels humming quietly, underfloor heating warming my socks, and eco-touches everywhere without preaching. It's the sort of spot that makes you breathe deeper, slows the pulse after the madness of modern life.

As the sun dipped low, painting the sky in those classic Cornish pinks and oranges, I stepped out to the decking with a cuppa, listening to the faint crash of waves from Bude's Summerleaze Beach just a couple of miles off. That mishap on the lane? Forgotten. Flow Roundhouse had me hooked from the off – a proper gem that turned my bungled arrival into the perfect setup for unwinding. If you're after first impressions that stick, this is your bolthole.
