About Cornwall
I’ll never forget the drive down to Fowey in mid-autumn – that crisp October bite in the air turning the journey into a proper Cornish adventure. We’d piled into the car from upcountry, me navigating with a dodgy signal on my phone, and about 20 miles from the Exclusive 3 Bed cottage, disaster struck: a rogue pasty crumb from my lunch wedged itself right into the CD player, jamming it solid. No radio, no podcasts, just the hum of the engine and my other half’s tuneless rendition of “Cornwall My Home” to keep us going. Laughable now, but it had us in stitches – a proper insignificant mishap to kick off the holiday.

By the time we trundled into Fowey, the late afternoon light was fading fast, that golden autumn glow painting the estuary in hues of amber and rust. Cornwall in October is magic, innit? No summer crowds clogging the lanes, just locals pottering about and the odd dog-walker braving the chill. We parked up near the cottage – a stone’s throw from the harbour, tucked away in that quintessential Fowey spot where the sea air hits you like a brisk hello. Exclusive 3 Bed lives up to its name: a smart, modern three-bedder that feels exclusive without being flashy, all cosy corners and sea views that make you sigh with relief after a long drive.

Stepping inside was pure autumn bliss. The wood-burning stove was already set with kindling, begging to be lit against the deepening dusk, and the air smelled faintly of fresh scones – or maybe that was just my imagination after the pasty fiasco. We dumped our bags and cracked open a bottle of local Polgoon cider, the kind that’s orchard-fresh and perfect for the season. First impressions? Spot on. The open-plan kitchen-diner overlooks the water, where you could just make out the bobbing boats in the fading light, their masts silhouetted against a sky streaked with pink. October’s shorter days meant we were straight into that hygge vibe – no faffing about with beach towels or sun cream, just straight to slippers and stew.

We wandered out for a nose around as the sun dipped proper low. Fowey’s harbour path was carpeted in fallen leaves, crunching underfoot like nature’s own autumn ASMR. The seasonal shift was everywhere: fishing boats unloading the day’s catch, crab pots stacked high, and that briny tang sharpened by the cooler air. No hordes of day-trippers, thank goodness – just us and a few hardy souls sipping tea at the quay. I nipped into a tiny pasty shop (redemption after the car incident) and grabbed some proper Cornish fare: a steaming oggy with extra butter, which we devoured on a bench watching the tide turn. The chill wind off the estuary had us zipping up our coats, but it was invigorating, the kind of fresh that makes your cheeks glow.

Back at the cottage, we finally got that stove roaring. Flames dancing, warming the flagstone floor, with the windows misting up from the contrast – pure seasonal poetry. The three bedrooms were a treat: ours with a massive bed piled high with goose-down duvets, ready for those crisp nights when Cornwall’s autumn fog rolls in off the sea. The kids claimed the twin with the bunk beds, giggling about ghost stories from Daphne du Maurier’s haunts nearby. It got me reflecting, sat there with a cuppa, flames flickering: in the rush of everyday life, we forget how a place like this, in this mellow time of year, strips it all back. No distractions, just the rhythm of the tides and the simple joy of being somewhere timeless.

First evening in, and I was already smitten. October shaped every moment – the mellow light, the quiet paths, the cosy retreat from the bracing breeze. Exclusive 3 Bed wasn’t just a holiday let; it was our perfect autumn bolthole in Fowey, whispering promises of more lazy mornings wrapped in that seasonal embrace. Can’t wait to go back.
