About Cornwall
I’ll never forget the drive down to Fowey in mid-autumn – that crisp October bite in the air turning the A30 into a golden gauntlet of slowing caravans and leaf-strewn lanes. We’d set off from Devon at dawn, me at the wheel with a thermos of builder’s tea and my mate Dave in the passenger seat, already moaning about the sat-nav’s cheeky rerouting through Bodmin. The season had painted Cornwall in those moody hues I love: rust-red bracken on the moors, slate-grey skies threatening rain but mostly just teasing with light drizzle. By the time we neared Fowey, the hedges were dripping with blackberries we’d stopped to pick (well, mostly eat on the spot), and the sea mist was rolling in like an old friend saying hello.

Then came the mishap – nothing major, just classic me. About five miles out, I misjudged a narrow Polruan lane and clipped the wing mirror on a stone wall. “Bloody hell, that’s going to cost a bob or two,” Dave chuckled, as I wedged it back with some gaffa tape from the boot. Laughing it off felt right in that autumnal glow; the fading light made the whole kerfuffle seem like a proper Cornish welcome, reminding me how these little cock-ups are what make trips memorable.

Pulling up to Exclusive 3 Bed Ht just before dusk, the property hit us like a warm hug from the hedgerows. Tucked into a quiet spot overlooking the gentle slope towards Fowey’s estuary – no more than a mile’s stroll away – it’s the sort of place that whispers luxury without shouting. The exterior, all weathered stone and climbing ivy heavy with autumn berries, blended seamlessly into the landscape, as if it’d grown there over centuries. We tumbled out into air thick with woodsmoke from nearby chimneys and the faint tang of seaweed, the season’s chill nipping at our ears while the low sun gilded the thatched roof.

Stepping inside was pure bliss after the drive. The open-plan living space wrapped us in cosiness: a wood-burning stove already laid with kindling (cheers to the hosts for that thoughtful touch), plush sofas begging us to flop down, and vast windows framing the estuary’s glassy calm. October’s shorter days meant golden hour lingered late, bathing the room in amber light that danced on the polished oak floors. We cracked open a bottle of local Rattler cider – it’s always cider down here in harvest time – and just soaked it in. Dave fiddled with the smart thermostat, cranking up the underfloor heating against the creeping damp, while I pottered in the kitchen, its granite worktops perfect for chopping up pasties from the Fowey deli we’d spotted en route.

First impressions? Spot on for an autumn escape. The three bedrooms upstairs were havens of fluffy duvets and sea-view windows; ours had a king-sized bed that swallowed you whole, with the sound of distant waves lulling like a Cornish lullaby. No blasting telly needed – the season’s early nights invited board games by the fire, not scrolling Netflix. We ventured out briefly at twilight for a pint at the Ship Inn down in town, the harbour lights twinkling through the mist, fishing boats bobbing under strings of fairy lights for the Fowey Food Festival prep. Back at the cottage, rain pattered softly on the roof as we roasted chestnuts – gathered from the garden path – and tucked into fish pie from Polperro’s smokehouse, just a quick drive away.

Sitting there, flames crackling, I had a quiet moment of reflection. Amid the laughter and the minor mirror drama, autumn in Cornwall stripped it all back: no summer crowds, just space to breathe, the land winding down like it knew we needed recharging. That first evening at Exclusive 3 Bed Ht wasn’t just arrival – it was sinking into the soul of the season, proper job. Can’t wait to return when the leaves are at their peak.
