About Cornwall
Pulling up to the cottage on that first afternoon was pure magic. Tucked away in a quiet corner just off the beaten track—none of your touristy harbourside tat here—it looked like something out of a storybook, all whitewashed walls and a cheeky little garden spilling over with hydrangeas. The host had left the key in a clever spot under a flowerpot (cheers for that, no faffing about), and stepping inside, I was hit with that instant "home away from home" vibe. Spotless kitchen with all the mod cons, a lounge that screamed cosy with its wood burner (not lit yet, mind, but tempting), and those two bedrooms upstairs? Fluffy as clouds, with views peeking out to the trees. First impressions? Ten out of ten—felt exclusive without being stuffy, just right for solo unwinding or a mates' getaway. But here's the real joy of the place: it's brilliantly placed for stumbling on Cornwall's hidden gems by accident. No itinerary for me this trip; I just fancied getting lost, trainers be damned. That first evening, as the sun dipped low, I wandered out the back gate onto a footpath I'd not clocked on the map. It meandered through ancient woodland, ferns brushing my knees, and spat me out at a secret cove I'd never heard of—Polridmouth Beach, or something like that, a pebbly sliver hemmed by cliffs, utterly deserted save for a lone heron eyeing me suspiciously. Sat there with a flask of tea, watching the waves gnaw at driftwood, and thought, "This is why we come to Cornwall—not the postcard spots, but these accidental finds." Next morning, fuel'd up on a fry-up courtesy of the cottage's well-stocked pantry (proper bacon, none of your rubbery rubbish), I struck out again, letting the lanes lead me. A wrong turn down a single-track road—nearly clipped a passing tractor, heart in mouth—deposited me at a tucked-away spot called Lanteglos-by-Fowey. No crowds, just a crumbling chapel ruin overgrown with ivy, overlooking the river where seals bobbed about like cheeky locals. I picnicked on a bench there, chuckling at how my rubbish navigation had gifted me this gem. Later, pushing further on foot from the cottage, I chanced upon a wildflower meadow bursting with butterflies, right on the edge of Polkerris—fields of poppies swaying in the breeze, with the sea whispering below. Bloody brilliant, that was; felt like I'd hacked into some secret level of Cornwall. By day three, I'd well and truly embraced the art of getting lost. One last potter from the cottage led me to a hidden smugglers' path snaking along the clifftops near Readymoney Cove—narrow as a badger's burrow, with gorse scratching my legs, but opening up to views that stopped me dead. The Fowey estuary glittering like crushed glass, fishing boats chugging home, and not a soul in sight. Sat on a boulder, munching a cream tea pilfered from a village shop (jam first, obviously), and had a proper moment of reflection. Life back home's a whirlwind of deadlines and doom-scrolling—here, in these off-the-radar nooks uncovered by sheer wanderlust, everything slowed. That cottage wasn't just a base; it was a launchpad for rediscovering the simple thrill of not knowing what's round the bend. If you're after Cornwall's soul, skip the guides and book this spot—you'll thank me when you find your own hidden paradise. |
