About Cornwall
I finally made it to 8 Spinnakers in Newquay after a bit of a faff on the drive down from Bristol. Picture this: I'm bombing along the A30, past Bodmin Moor with its moody tors looming like ancient sentinels, when—splat!—a seagull decides my windscreen is its personal canvas. Proper Hitchcock moment, feathers everywhere, and me screeching to a halt at the next services to wipe it off with a soggy service station napkin. Laughable now, but at the time I was cursing the Cornish skies for their feathered assassins. Still, by late afternoon, I pulled up outside this cracking little two-bedroom terraced cottage tucked into a quiet spot just a short stroll from Newquay's Towan Headland. First impressions? Bloody brilliant. The whitewashed exterior screamed "proper seaside hideaway," and as I lug my bag up the steps, the sea air hit me like a salty slap—bracing, invigorating, with that faint tang of pasties wafting from somewhere nearby.

Stepping inside, it felt like slipping into a mate's cosy living room rather than a holiday let. The open-plan lounge-kitchen was spot on: squishy sofas begging for a collapse, a telly mounted for rainy evenings (foreshadowing much?), and a kitchen kitted out with everything from cafetière to toaster—none of that "bring your own teabags" nonsense. Upstairs, my bedroom overlooked a jumble of rooftops towards the ocean, with crisp white sheets and a window that framed Fistral Beach like a postcard. The second bedroom was perfect for solo travellers like me, or if I'd dragged a pal along. But honestly, it was the terrace that sealed it—a sunny south-facing perch with bistro table and chairs, ideal for pretending you're on the Med while sipping a cold lager. First impressions ticked every box: clean as a whistle, thoughtfully laid out, and that unbeatable location, barely five minutes' walk to the beach.

Day one proper kicked off with my grand plan: conquer the coastal path from Towan Headland to Crantock Beach, a classic three-miler hugging the cliffs with cracking views of the Atlantic rollers. Weather app said "partly cloudy," so I layered up in waterproofs, grabbed my OS map (old school, innit?), and set off, whistling "Cornwall My Home" under my breath. The path started promising—wildflowers nodding in the breeze, gulls wheeling overhead (keeping a wary eye after my windscreen drama), and the sea sparkling like shattered glass. Newquay's headland paths are pure Cornwall magic: rugged cliffs dropping to golden sands, with the odd surfer dotting the waves below. I paused at the viewpoint, munching a Cornish fudge bar from the corner shop, feeling like king of the castle.

But oh, the British weather—traitor that it is. Halfway along, the clouds rolled in thicker than my nan's clootie dumpling. First a drizzle, then proper stair rods hammering down, turning the sandy tracks to slick mud. I ducked under a gorse bush for shelter, laughing at myself soaked to the skin, hood flapping uselessly. Plan B: abort the full hike and loop back via the quieter lanes towards Porth Joke, that hidden cove gem just a mile or so off. Smart move—the rain eased to a misty haze, revealing rainbows arcing over the dunes. Paddling barefoot in the shallows (trainers abandoned in the cottage), I reflected on how these weather whims force you to slow down. No Instagram-perfect sunset hike, but a soggy, soul-stirring wander that reminded me why I love Cornwall: it's wild, unpredictable, and always up for a laugh.

Back at 8 Spinnakers by tea time, dripping but chuffed, I fired up the electric hob for a fry-up—bacon sizzling, kettle on for a proper builder's brew. Peeling off wet socks on the terrace (now miraculously sunny again), I watched the clouds scud away over the bay. That first day set the tone for the whole three-day jaunt: weather dictating detours, hikes morphing into impromptu explorations, all within easy walking distance—no car needed. If you're after a base for footloose adventures in Newquay's cliffs and coves, this spot's a gem. Can't wait to go back and let the rain rewrite the route.
