About Cornwall
The mishap? A rogue branch—probably from one of those ancient oaks—snagged my wing mirror just as I rounded a bend. There was a proper crunch, and I pulled over in a layby, heart thumping, to inspect the damage. It was dangling like a drunk at closing time, but held on by a thread. "Brilliant," I muttered, fiddling with it while a tractor trundled past, its farmer giving me a sympathetic nod. No signal for AA, naturally, so I MacGyvered it with a bit of string from the boot and carried on, mirror flapping like a semaphore flag. Laughable now, but in the moment, it had me questioning my life choices—why didn't I just stick to the A38? By the time I rolled up to 6 Southern Place around noon, I was knackered, dusty, and swearing off rural navigation forever. The cottage sits in a peaceful close off Southern Place, surrounded by those classic Cornish stone walls and gardens bursting with hydrangeas—proper lush, even in early autumn. I parked on the drive, grabbed my bags, and fumbled the key safe code (third time lucky, thanks nerves). Pushing open the door, though, all the chaos melted away. The first impression? Pure bloody bliss. Step inside, and you're hit with this warm, welcoming vibe—wooden beams overhead, a snug lounge with a wood-burning stove begging for a fire later, and squishy sofas that screamed "flop here now." I dumped my stuff and proper explored. The kitchen's a dream: granite worktops, a Belfast sink, and all the gadgets you'd need for a fry-up or pasty feast. I stuck the kettle on (Cornish breakfast tea, obviously) and wandered out to the garden patio—enclosed and private, with views over the neighbouring fields rolling gently towards the horizon. Seagulls wheeled overhead, and I could hear the faint hum of the countryside, no traffic, no sirens. Sat there with my mug, feet up, munching a biscuit from the welcome pack, and thought, "This is it, innit?" That mirror fiasco felt like a distant memory already. Upstairs, the bedrooms are spot on—comfy kingsize in the main with fluffy duvets, and a twin for mates or kids. The bathroom's got a rainfall shower that I tested immediately; hot water gushing like it was thrilled to see me. Light streams in through the velux windows, making everything feel airy and bright. From the master, you glimpse the Tamar Valley way off, but it's all about that intimate cottage feel here—no grand vistas, just peaceful seclusion. Reflecting on it now, that daft drive was the perfect foil to the cottage's magic. I'd arrived in a flap, expecting disaster, but 6 Southern Place wrapped me up like a warm pasty. It's the sort of place that resets you without trying too hard—rustic charm without the frills, dead central for nipping to Liskeard for supplies or a pub pint. First impressions? Ten out of ten. Can't wait to go back, mirror be damned. |
