About Cornwall
First impressions? Blimey, it was love at first sight. The lodge looked like it'd been plucked straight from a Nordic fairy tale – all warm timber cladding, pitched roof, and that massive steaming hot tub bubbling away on the private deck like a welcome hug. But honestly, what stole the show weren't the fancy fittings; it was the locals who swarmed out of the woodwork the moment we arrived, each one quirkier than the last. Cornwall's got a knack for that, hasn't it? Proper characters who make you feel like you've stumbled into a sitcom. No sooner had I parked than old Reg shuffled over from the neighbouring caravan – he's the site warden, I reckon, with a face like a weathered cliff and a flat cap that must've been glued on since the war. "New 'ere, are ya?" he barked, eyeing Monty suspiciously. "That dog's got more mud on 'im than a tin miner's boot. Mind he don't nick my chickens!" Turned out Reg's got a whole menagerie: three hens named after the Spice Girls – Scary, Posh, and Baby – and a one-eyed cockerel called Captain Bligh who struts about like he runs the show. We got chatting over a cuppa he thrust into my hand (stewed to perfection, mind), and he regaled me with tales of the great storm of '89 that "near blew the pub off Treleigh Hill." His accent was pure Kernow, thick as clotted cream, and by the time he'd finished, I was in stitches, promising to keep Monty on a lead. Then there was Tina from the farm up the lane – she rocked up in a battered Land Rover, delivering fresh pasties still warm from the oven. "Heard you lot arrived," she grinned, handing over a greasy paper bag. "Can't have townies starving on their first day!" Tina's the sort who finishes every sentence with a cackle, and she's got stories for days about her "rogue goat, Gerald," who once headbutted a tourist clean into a hedge. We sat on the lodge steps, munching those beauties – proper Cornish, with chunky beef and a kick of pepper – while she quizzed me on city life. "London? Full of suits and stress! Down 'ere, we let the sea sort it out." Her laugh was infectious, and before long, she was plotting to drag us to the local pub quiz tomorrow night. Not five minutes later, young Jake pedalled up on a bike that looked like it'd seen better days, all freckles and gap-toothed grin. He's the paperboy-cum-handyman, no more than 12, with a sideline flogging "genuine" bits of driftwood "from the smugglers' cove." "Five quid a piece, mister! Perfect for the hot tub!" I haggled him down to a fiver for three, and he spilled the beans on the best pasty spots within a stone's throw – Trevethick's van at the crossroads, allegedly unbeatable. Kid's a natural salesman, with chat as smooth as a pilchard. As the sun dipped low, painting the rolling fields gold, I slipped into that hot tub solo for a moment of peace, Monty snoring nearby. Reflecting on it, amid all the bonhomie, I realised how these encounters cut through the holiday gloss – they're the real magic. Reg's gruff warmth, Tina's cackle, Jake's cheeky hustle; they made arriving feel like coming home. First impressions of the lodge? Spot on. But the quirky locals? They've got me hooked already, and we've barely unpacked. |
