About Cornwall
I finally made it to 6 Lake View near Looe after what felt like the scenic route from hell – or at least from the M5. Picture this: I'd packed the car with enough books, tea bags, and pasties to last a siege, humming along to some cracking Radio 2 tunes. Then, ten miles from the turning, I misread the sat-nav (classic me, always trusting the robot voice over my instincts) and ended up in a narrow lane that was basically a goat track. Branches scraping the roof, heart in mouth, until I backed out giggling like an idiot. A proper Cornwall welcome, innit? Twenty minutes later, I pulled up to this gem of a lodge tucked away in Lanreath, and all was right with the world.

First impressions? Blimey, it was love at first sight. Perched on the edge of a serene fishing lake, the place is pure cosy magic – think wooden beams, a wood-burning stove begging to be lit, and windows framing views that make you forget the rat race ever existed. I stepped inside, dropped my bags, and just stood there, breathing in that fresh, piney air mixed with the faint whiff of the lake. No grand entrance hall or fancy lobby; just a homely vibe that whispered, "Slow down, mate. You've earned it." After that daft driving faff, it felt like the universe was handing me a mug of builder's tea and a hammock.

The garden sealed the deal. Overgrown in the best way – wildflowers nodding in the breeze, a rickety bench overlooking the water where ducks were having a right old chinwag. I flopped down with my battered copy of a Poldark novel (had to, didn't I?), feet up, and watched the world go by. No itinerary, no alarms. Just the joy of bugger all. A squirrel dashed across the lawn, probably nicking nuts from the bird feeder, and I chuckled to myself – proper wildlife entertainment, better than Netflix.

That first afternoon, I fancied a gentle potter to stretch the legs. A ten-minute wander down the lane took me to Lanreath's heart: the little post office-slash-shop where the chap behind the counter knows your nan's middle name. Grabbed a fresh cream tea (Cornwall's not messing about) and a pasty still warm from the oven – none of your chain rubbish, this was proper, flaky perfection. Back at the lodge, I spread out on the sun-dappled patio, crumbs everywhere, savouring every slow bite while the lake lapped lazily below. Time stretched like toffee; who needs adventures when doing sod all feels this lush?

Evening rolled in soft and golden. I cracked open a bottle of Cornish cider (local tipple, naturally), lit that stove for the crackle and glow, and curled up in the squishy armchair with a blanket. The windows steamed up a tad from the kettle on the hob, and outside, mist rose off the water like a gentle dream. Listening to the owls starting their hoot-a-thon, I had one of those quiet moments – you know, staring into the flames thinking, "Blimey, when did life get so frantic? This is what it's about: no plans, no rush, just being." A bit soppy, I grant you, but three days in and already recharged.

Wandering the garden paths the next morning – dew-kissed and alive with birdsong – I spotted kingfishers darting over the lake. Magic, that. No need for hikes or tourist traps; a slow amble to the nearby pub for a pint and a natter with locals about the fishing was plenty. Back for lunch on the veranda: cheese scone, flask of tea, book forgotten as I dozed in the hammock. The sheer bliss of faffing about – pruning a herb pot here, sketching the view there – that's the holiday I didn't know I craved. 6 Lake View isn't just a stay; it's a nudge to hit pause. If you're knackered from the daily grind, get yourself here. Trust me, you'll arrive frazzled and leave floating.
