About Cornwall
I’ll never forget the drive down to 59 Valley Lodge near Callington in Cornwall – it was mid-autumn, that crisp October stretch when the leaves are turning gold but the wind still has a cheeky bite, and I’d packed far too many jumpers just in case. My mate Dave and I were buzzing for a three-day getaway, escaping the grey London drizzle for some proper Cornish air. The journey from the M5 was a dream at first, winding through Devon’s rolling hills painted in fiery oranges and reds, the hedgerows heavy with blackberries we’d stopped to pick (and mostly eat on the spot). But then, classic me, about 20 miles out, I took a wrong turn onto a narrow lane that screamed “no through road” – splattered in mud from recent rains, naturally. The car got proper stuck in a puddle that looked innocent but was basically a swamp. We laughed like idiots as we pushed it free, covered in muck, vowing it’d make a cracking story over the first pint.

Finally rolling up to Valley Lodge as the late afternoon sun dipped low – autumn’s short days mean everything feels golden-hour urgent – I was gobsmacked. Tucked in a peaceful spot just outside Callington, this cosy detached lodge is the sort of place Cornwall does best: stone-built charm with a thatched roof that whispered “holiday bliss” even before we unlocked the door. The seasonal shift had turned the surrounding valley into a patchwork quilt of rustling bracken and dew-kissed ferns, with the Tamar Valley’s mist rolling in like a soft blanket. It was that perfect autumn hush – no summer crowds, just the rustle of leaves and distant sheep bleating, making it feel like we’d nicked a secret slice of Eden.

Stepping inside, the first impressions hit like a warm hug. The open-plan living area was snug as a bug, with a wood-burning stove already begging for logs (we got that roaring in no time, thanks to the complimentary basket). Autumn’s chill made it heaven – we kicked off our boots by the door, still damp from our muddy mishap, and flopped onto the plush sofa, mugs of tea steaming. The kitchen was a dream for lazy self-catering: fully kitted with everything from a proper Aga-style cooker to quirky mugs painted with pasties and cream teas. I chuckled to myself picturing summer guests battling the heat here; no, this time of year, it’s all about hearty stews bubbling away while rain patters the windows.

Outside, the private patio was my favourite bit – sheltered enough for that first evening barbecue, even as the sun set early around 6pm, painting the sky in bruised purples and pinks. We grilled local sausages from the nearby farm shop (Callington’s got a cracking one, five minutes’ drive), wrapped in foil against the nippy breeze, with woodsmoke mingling with fallen apple scents from the garden trees. The seasonal magic was everywhere: spiderwebs glistening on the fence like fairy lace in the morning dew, and that fresh, earthy smell after a light shower that makes Cornwall sing in autumn. No battling for parking at Kit Hill – just a short stroll up the lane for misty views over the moorland, all gorse and heather fading to bronze.

Wandering the garden that first morning, coffee in hand, I had a proper moment of reflection. Life back home’s been a whirl – deadlines, doom-scrolling the news – but here, with the valley quiet under a canopy of turning leaves, it hit me: sometimes you need this seasonal slowdown, that gentle reminder from nature to just breathe. Dave caught me staring into the mist and ribbed me for getting soppy, but honestly, arriving at 59 Valley Lodge in autumn shaped our whole trip from the off. It wasn’t just a stay; it was a cosy reset, wrapped in Cornwall’s golden embrace. If you’re chasing that vibe, book it now – before winter steals the show.
