About Cornwall
I’ll never forget the drive down to Newquay for my three-day jaunt at 49 Atlantic Reach – a cheeky little mishap set the tone right from the off. I’d packed the car the night before, chucked in my wellies and a pasty from the petrol station, only to realise halfway through Devon that I’d left my phone charger behind. No biggie, I thought, Cornwall’s got plug sockets everywhere. But as the satnav (on its last 20% battery) guided me through those twisty lanes, I ended up taking a wrong turn towards Perranporth, adding a solid half-hour of swearing at roundabouts. Still, by the time I rolled into Atlantic Reach around teatime, the sun was dipping low over the dunes, and I was buzzing.

Pulling up to number 49, I was gobsmacked. It’s this cracking two-bedroom cottage tucked into a quiet corner of the holiday park, just a stone’s throw from the beach at Porth. Whitewashed walls, a tidy patio with sea glimpses, and that fresh sea-salt whiff in the air – proper postcard stuff. I dumped my bags and cracked open the patio doors, letting the waves crash in the distance. First impressions? Bliss. Modern inside with a cosy lounge, squishy sofas begging for a kip, and a kitchen stocked with all the bits you need for a fry-up. I’d booked it for the solitude, but Cornwall being Cornwall, the real magic kicked off with the locals.

No sooner had I unpacked a bottle of Cornish cider than old Reg from next door popped over. He’s the park’s unofficial mayor – flat cap, weather-beaten face like a gnarled cliff, and a labrador called Buster who thinks every patio’s his. “New ‘ere, are ya?” he grinned, eyeing my cider. “Don’t let the seals rob ya blind down on the beach.” Turns out Reg’s a retired fisherman who’s lived in Newquay since the Ark. Over the next hour, as the sun set in a blaze of orange, he regaled me with tales of smuggling brandy in the caves at low tide. “Council’s put up signs now, mind, but us locals know the real paths.” I laughed, offering him a sip, and he launched into a yarn about the time a pod of dolphins chased his boat right into Porth harbour. Proper character, Reg – the kind who makes you forget your charger woes.

Next morning, still buzzing from first impressions, I wandered down to the beach path, past the dunes dotted with marram grass. That’s when I bumped into Tina, the chip shop queen from the park’s little clubhouse. She’s all peroxide curls and neon wellies, running the place with her husband Mick. “Fancy a bacon sarnie, love?” she called, flipping rashers like a pro. We got chatting while I scoffed it on a bench overlooking the surf. Tina’s a Newquay native, born in a caravan during a storm – “Me mum says I came out screaming louder than the gales!” She dished the dirt on the best pasty spots within spitting distance (Fistral Beach Café, apparently, for the steak ‘n’ stilton), and warned me off the “tourist traps” further up the coast. “Stick local, duck – that’s the trick.” Her laugh was infectious, and before I knew it, we were swapping stories about Cornish summers. Mick chipped in from the fryer, muttering about “blooming Germans” hogging the waves, but with a wink that said he didn’t mean it.

By afternoon, lounging on 49’s patio with a cuppa, reflecting on it all, I felt a proper pang of self-awareness. Here I was, city lad from Bristol, chasing quiet, yet these quirky souls – Reg with his smuggler’s wink, Tina’s no-nonsense charm – had turned my hasty arrival into something richer. Cornwall’s not just the cottage or the crash of Atlantic waves; it’s the characters who breathe life into it. As Buster snored at my feet and Tina waved from afar, I thought, sod the charger – this is the real recharge. First impressions at 49 Atlantic Reach? Unbeatable.
