About Cornwall
I finally made it to 4 Stonerush Valley near Looe after what felt like the scenic route from hell – or at least from the M5. We'd piled into the car that misty Friday morning, me, the wife, and our two lads, aged 8 and 10, buzzing with that pre-holiday excitement that turns boys into human pinballs. Cornwall's twisting lanes are legendary, aren't they? All hedgerows and sudden hills that make your stomach do somersaults. Ours started with a classic Cornish cock-up: about five miles from Lanreath, I missed the turning for the valley road – too busy singing along to some dodgy 90s playlist – and ended up in a muddy farm track. The car groaned, the kids howled with laughter, and I reversed out looking like a right plonker, splattered in muck. "Dad's off-roading again!" they chorused. Typical me, turning a 20-minute drive into an hour's adventure.

By early afternoon, we crested the hill into Stonerush Valley, and blimey, what a sight. Tucked away in this lush, wooded hollow just a stone's throw from Looe, the cottage emerged like something from a postcard – a proper chocolate-boxy thing with stone walls, a thatched roof (or close enough), and a garden bursting with wildflowers. It's one of those Snaptrip gems, stunning from the off, with the stream gurgling nearby and birds doing their twilight chirps. We parked on the gravel drive, crunching underfoot, and unloaded amid much slamming of boots and "mine's the big bedroom!" squabbles. First impressions? Pure bliss. The air smelled of damp earth and sea salt, even though the coast's a quick hop away – that bracing Cornish tang that hits you right in the soul.

Stepping inside was like slipping into a warm hug. The living room's got this massive inglenook fireplace (unlit, but begging for logs later), squishy sofas in muted greens, and low-beamed ceilings that made the lads duck comically. "Watch your napper!" I grinned, ruffling their hair. Kitchen was a dream for lazy family cooking – Aga humming away, all mod cons hidden behind rustic doors, and a window overlooking the valley's greenery. We cracked open the welcome pack (cheers for the local cider and pasties – spot on), and while the missus unpacked, I nipped out to explore the garden. It's a proper riot of colour: lavender buzzing with bees, a veggie patch that looked home-grown, and those picnic benches screaming "al fresco tea". The hot tub sat there winking at us, steaming gently under a pergola – luxury without the pretension.

First evening set the tone for lodge life chaos, the good kind. Boys dashed about the enclosed garden, kicking a football into the hedges (retrieved one muddy ball from the stream after a heroic dive), while we supped tea on the patio, watching the sun dip behind the trees. Dinner was simple pleasures: heated up those pasties with beans on toast, devoured at the big oak table with stories of our farm-track fiasco. Laughter echoed off the walls, and as night fell, the valley went pin-drop quiet – no traffic hum, just owls hooting. Tucked into the super-king bed upstairs (views over the woods!), I lay there reflecting gently: life's mad rush back home in Bristol feels miles away already. Here, in this cosy nook, it's all about these unhurried moments – mud on the boots, full bellies, and family daftness. Who needs grand plans when a valley cottage like this wraps you up so perfectly? Can't wait for day two, but sod it, this arrival's already the holiday highlight.
