About 3 Hedgerows.

Lanreath is a rural village in southeast Cornwall, five miles west of Looe. It has a local shop, Post Office and parish church, plus ghost stories like a black-clad spectre driving a coach pulled by a headless horse. Nearby Pelynt offers shops and pubs, including the 16th-century Jubilee Inn. Looe, Cornwall’s second-largest fishing port, buzzes around East Looe’s quay, linked to West Looe by a 19th-century bridge. Its sandy beach is ideal for families. Picturesque Polperro lies further along the coast. Lanreath provides easy access to coast, moors, National Trust sites and gardens.

About Cornwall
I finally made it to 3 Hedgerows after what felt like the scenic route from hell – or at least from the M5, via a detour through some godforsaken B-road where my sat-nav decided to have a midlife crisis and guided us straight into a flock of indifferent sheep. Picture this: me, swearing under my breath in that very British way (lots of "blasted" and "ruddy"), while the kids in the back seat treat it like a petting zoo safari. We lost a good 20 minutes, but honestly, it was the perfect opener for our three-day jaunt to Looe – a spot of chaos to remind us we're on holiday, not a military manoeuvre.

Pulling up to 3 Hedgerows just before teatime, I was gobsmacked. Tucked away in a quiet nook off the beaten track near Looe, this little semi-detached cottage is the epitome of that cosy Cornish hideaway you've been scrolling Instagram for. It's got that classic whitewashed exterior with roses clambering up the walls – proper chocolate-box stuff, but without the twee overload. The garden's a riot of wildflowers and herbs, buzzing with bees, and there's a cheeky hot tub lurking round the back, half-hidden like it's shy about showing off. We tumbled out of the car, bags flying everywhere, and the kids immediately claimed the lawn as their kingdom, rolling about like they'd been cooped up for weeks (which, fair play, they had).

Stepping inside was like being hugged by a nan who's really good at baking. The living room's all low beams and squishy sofas, with a wood burner that screamed "cosy nights in" even on a balmy summer's eve. I plonked myself down, kicked off my wellies, and inhaled that faint scent of sea salt mixed with fresh linen – pure Cornwall, that. The kitchen's a dream for lazy family suppers: granite worktops, a Belfast sink big enough to bathe a toddler in (tempting), and all the gadgets you need without the faff. I rustled up some fish finger butties while the other half unpacked, and we cracked open a bottle of local Cornish cider – sharp, fizzy, and just boozy enough to erase the sheep trauma.

First impressions? Blissfully unpretentious. The bedrooms are snug as a bug, with those crisp white duvets and views peeking out to the garden. Our lot dashed upstairs, claiming the twin room with its bunk bed (cue immediate wrestling match – lodge life chaos at its finest), while we bagged the master with its en-suite loo. Nothing flash, but spotless and thoughtful – fluffy towels, proper tea bags (none of your dusty teabag nonsense), and a telly for rainy days, though who needs it with the sea so close?

That evening, we wandered a stone's throw to the secluded heated outdoor pool shared with the neighbour – a proper treat, shimmering under fairy lights as the sun dipped low. The kids splashed about like otters while I sipped my cider, toes dangling in the water, watching the world slow down. Looe's just a gentle stroll or quick drive away – that higgledy-piggledy harbour with fishing boats bobbing, the scent of chips frying, and pasties begging to be bought. We nipped down for fish suppers from a no-nonsense chippie, the kind where the batter crunches like it means business. Sat on a bench by the beach, paper packets steaming, gulls eyeing us jealously – simple pleasures don't get simpler.

But here's a quiet moment amid the mayhem: as the sun set over the bay, painting everything pink and gold, I caught myself staring out from the cottage patio. Three days of this? With the family finally unwinding, no emails pinging, just the hum of crickets and waves in the distance? It hit me – life's too short for anything but these unhurried pockets of joy. The sheep detour was a blessing in disguise; it got us here, to this perfect little Cornish bubble. Can't wait to see what tomorrow brings, but right now, this first taste of 3 Hedgerows feels like home.
