About Cornwall
Pulling up to the lodge just as the sun dipped low over the fields, I was knackered but buzzing. Tucked away in that peaceful bit of St. Minver Lowlands, it looked every bit the cosy haven from the photos – a proper wooden lodge with a pitched roof, surrounded by lush greenery and not a hint of traffic noise. The mishap had me arriving in a flap, tumbling out with bags flying everywhere, but the first proper breath of that salty, briny air hit me like a reset button. No urban smog here; just the faint whiff of the nearby Camel Estuary mingling with wildflowers. I fumbled the key code on the keypad – third time lucky, thank goodness – and stepped inside, half expecting mice to scatter like in a Beatrix Potter tale. Crikey, the first impressions didn't disappoint. The open-plan living area opened right up, with big windows flooding the place with that golden evening light. Plump sofas in neutral tones begged for a collapse, and the kitchen was kitted out like a telly chef's dream – shiny hob, massive fridge, even a proper cafetière for my morning fix. I dumped my stuff and poked around the three bedrooms; mine had a super-king bed that looked like it could swallow you whole, crisp white duvet and all. The en-suite was compact but spotless, with fluffy towels that screamed "treat yourself". Out back, the decking area with its picnic bench overlooked a little private garden – nothing flashy, but perfect for a cheeky beer while watching the birds flit about. I reckon the kids (well, my mates' lot tagging along) would go mad for the space; bunks in one room, enough for a full house without anyone drawing straws. That arrival kerfuffle had me reflecting a bit as I cracked open a tinnie on the deck. Here I was, mid-40s, still locking keys in boots like a teenager, rushing through life without savouring the detours. Cornwall's got this way of pulling you up short – one minute you're cursing the AA wait, the next you're grinning at swallows darting over the estuary in the distance. From the lodge, it's a doddle to wander down to St. Minver's village green, maybe a ten-minute stroll, pop into the local shop for milk and a gossip with the postie. Or just five minutes to the nearest footpath snaking towards the coast – Polzeath's sandy stretch isn't miles away, but close enough to hear the waves crashing on the breeze. The whole vibe is pure escapism: no blaring music, just the rustle of leaves and that endless, optimistic sky. By nightfall, with the woodburner flickering (I got it going first go, smug as you like), I was already plotting tomorrow's rockpool rummage or pasty pilgrimage to the harbour. That messy arrival? Best mishap ever – it made the lodge feel like home from the off, all the more welcoming for my clownish entrance. If you're after a base in St. Minver that's equal parts comfy and cracking location, this is it. Can't wait for day two. |
