About Cornwall
I finally made it to Newquay after a bit of a faff on the drive down from Bristol – nothing major, just a rogue seagull dive-bombing my windscreen near Bodmin, leaving a splatter that turned my wipers into a comedy routine. Three days in a cracking 3 Bed Lodge, tucked away in north Cornwall, was just what I needed to shake off the daily grind. Arriving late afternoon on that first day, I pulled up to this cosy log cabin vibe, all wooden charm and tucked into a quiet spot perfect for unwinding. First impressions? Spot on – it felt like stepping into a hug from an old mate, with its three snug bedrooms, open-plan living area, and a patio begging for a cuppa.

The weather gods greeted me with a classic Cornish tease: bright blue skies one minute, then a cheeky drizzle the next. I dumped my bags, laced up my boots, and headed out for a proper first impression hike along the nearby coastal path – you're never more than a stone's throw from the sea here. Newquay's cliffs are legendary, and that initial stroll towards Towan Head was pure magic. The sun was blazing, gorse blooming yellow like it was showing off, and the Atlantic crashing below with that invigorating roar. I felt ten feet tall, puffing along the South West Coast Path, spotting surfers dotting the waves like seals in wetsuits. "This is it," I thought, "proper holiday bliss."

But oh, Cornwall weather – it's got a wicked sense of humour. Halfway round, about a mile in, the sky turned moody as a teenager. Fat raindrops started, then it proper lashed down, turning the path into a slippery mudslide. I hunkered under a gorse bush (not the cleverest move, those thorns have attitude), laughing at myself as water streamed off my hood. Plan A – epic cliff-top ramble to the headland viewpoint – scuppered. Instead, I squelched back towards the lodge, plotting Plan B on the fly. That's the beauty of these stays; everything's walkable, no car faff needed.

Back at the cabin, dripping like a drowned rat, I brewed a builder's tea and eyed the patio through the window. The rain eased to a misty haze, so out I went again, this time for a gentler loop around the local lanes – think narrow hedgerows, wildflowers nodding in the breeze, and the odd cow eyeing me suspiciously. First evening impressions deepened: the lodge's garden felt like a secret hideaway, with benches perfect for pondering life's little what-ifs. Sat there as the clouds parted for a sneaky sunset, all orange and pink over the hills, I had one of those quiet moments. Work stress? Deadlines? They seemed daft from up here. Why do we let that lot boss us about when there's this on offer? Gentle nudge to self: more of this, less scrolling.

Day two dawned drizzly, so my grand hike to Crantock Beach got rerouted to a woodland wander just behind the lodge – lush ferns, babbling streams, and that earthy petrichor scent I love. Weather flipped again by noon; sun out, and suddenly I'm power-walking the clifftops anew, wind whipping my cheeks rosy. Spotted a kestrel hovering like a drone – nature's free show. Lunch was a pasty scoffed on a bench overlooking Porth Beach, sand shifting underfoot as waves teased the shore. The changing skies kept me on my toes, plans pivoting from long hauls to short, sharp bursts of fresh air. Humour in the chaos: I nearly face-planted into a puddle pretending to be Indiana Jones dodging rain squalls.

By the third morning, first impressions had bloomed into full-on affection for the place. Another weather-whiplash day – hail one minute, balmy the next – led to my favourite hike yet: a circular route hugging the coastline back to base, with detours for beachcombing at low tide. Picking over shells and driftwood, I reflected on how these unpredictable walks mirror life – sodden setbacks one step, golden views the next. The 3 Bed Lodge was the perfect hub: warm, welcoming, steps from it all. If you're after Cornwall's wild heart without the hassle, this is your spot. Three days of soggy adventures, and I'm already plotting a return.
