About Cornwall
I’ll never forget the drive down to Little Petherick in late autumn – that crisp October chill hanging in the air like a cheeky reminder that summer’s well and truly packed its bags. Me and the family piled into the car from upcountry, kids buzzing with excitement about Cornwall, while I fiddled with the sat-nav, convinced I knew a shortcut through the twisty lanes. Big mistake. About five miles out, we hit a classic Cornish roadblock: a rogue tractor trundling along at snail’s pace, its massive rear lights flashing like it owned the B-road. We were stuck behind it for a good 20 minutes, laughing at first, then groaning as the kids started their “are we there yet?” chorus. I joked it was the universe’s way of saying, “Slow down, mate, savour the season.” By the time we pulled up to the 3 Bed Lodge, the sun was dipping low, painting the sky in those fiery oranges and purples that only Cornwall pulls off so dramatically in autumn.

Stepping out, the first thing that hit me was the smell – that earthy, briny tang of the sea mixed with damp leaves crunching underfoot. Little Petherick’s tucked away in this hidden valley, just a stone’s throw from the Camel Estuary, and in October, it’s like nature’s turned the volume down to a peaceful hum. No crowds, no screaming seagulls fighting over chips; just the gentle lap of the river and a breeze rustling the turning foliage. The lodge itself is one of those proper Cornish gems – a cosy wooden number perched on the edge of the creek, with big windows that frame the water like a living painting. We’d booked it for three days, and from that very first glance, it felt like the perfect autumn hideaway.

Fumbling with the key under the porch light (another minor mishap – I dropped it straight into a puddle, typical me), we tumbled inside, and oh, the warmth! A proper wood-burning stove was already crackling away, courtesy of the hosts, filling the open-plan living space with that smoky, comforting scent. The place is spot-on for a family: three snug bedrooms upstairs, all with those fluffy duvets begging you to burrow in against the evening chill. Downstairs, the kitchen’s kitted out with everything you need – I rustled up a quick pasty feast from the local shop in St Issey while the kids claimed the squishy sofas. Outside, the deck wraps around the lodge, overlooking the creek where the tide was just starting to creep in. In summer, I bet it’s alive with boats and day-trippers, but autumn? It’s serene. Mist rolled in off the water as we sipped tea, watching herons stalk the shallows. Magical.

That first evening, we wrapped up in coats and scarves – proper ones, mind, with the wind whipping up – and wandered the short path to the water’s edge. The creek path is right there, lined with golden ferns and those vibrant reds from the sycamores shedding their leaves. We skimmed stones (badly, in my case), giggling as they plopped straight in rather than bounce. The seasonal shift made it all feel intimate, like we’d stumbled into a private corner of Eden. No blasting sun to squint against; instead, that soft, diffused light perfect for photos that actually turn out.

Sitting there later, feet up by the fire with a mug of hot chocolate, I had a quiet moment of reflection. Life’s been a mad rush lately – work, school runs, the usual chaos. But arriving here, with autumn wrapping Cornwall in its mellow embrace, it was like hitting pause. The fading light, the cool nip in the air, the way the valley seemed to exhale after summer’s frenzy – it all nudged me to appreciate the slower pace. No grand adventures planned yet, just this: the lodge’s glow against the twilight, the family chattering softly. First impressions? Bloody brilliant. If you’re chasing that cosy Cornish autumn vibe, this is your spot. Can’t wait for day two.
