About 2 Faraway Fields.
Dobwalls is a charming rural village amid fields and wooded countryside. Just three miles from Liskeard, it's ideally placed near Bodmin Moor and Cornwall's north and south coasts. Explore Looe, Fowey and Polperro (15 miles south), Padstow and Polzeath (north coast), the Eden Project (15 miles), or Plymouth (30-min drive or 25-min train from Liskeard). A perfect base with harbour, aquarium, shops, eateries and theatres. Nearby attractions.
About Cornwall
We arrived mid-afternoon on a Friday, the sky a cheeky Cornish blue that promised adventure. Unloaded the bags, brewed a cuppa in the surprisingly roomy kitchen (those Rayburn vibes had me sorted), and hit the trails straight away. The cottage backs onto footpaths that snake into the moor – no faffing about with parking, just step out the garden gate. First hike was a gentle loop around nearby fields, maybe two miles, dodging sheep and breathing in that briny Atlantic air that somehow sneaks over from the coast. Weather was bang on: warm sun on my face, buzzards wheeling overhead. I felt like a proper explorer, snapping pics of gorse bushes in full yellow blaze and wild ponies eyeing me suspiciously. "This is it," I thought, grinning like an idiot. No crowds, just us and the wind whispering through the bracken. Saturday dawned with that classic British tease – mist rolling in like it owned the place. Undeterred, we laced up and tackled a steeper path up to a tor about a mile off, the kind with chunky granite boulders begging to be scrambled. The fog turned it all ethereal, like hiking through a Brontë novel, but with midges for comic relief. I slipped once on damp grass – nothing major, just enough to soak my left trainer and spark a giggle-fit. "Serves you right for packing trainers instead of spares," I chided myself. By the top, the clouds parted just enough for a glimpse of the patchwork valleys below, steam rising off the dew. We picnicked on pasties from a Liskeard bakery (grabbed en route – proper job, flaky and heaving with steak), huddled against the wind. That moment, sat there with a Thermos of tea, watching the weather flip from gloom to glow, hit me gently. Life's too short for rigid plans; sometimes the mishaps make the best stories. A quiet nod to slowing down, you know? Come Sunday, the heavens properly opened – horizontal rain lashing the windows as we plotted our shortest stroll yet. A boggy track looping back to the cottage, no more than a mile, but blimey, it tested us. Puddles turned to lakes, my hood flapping like a defeated sail, but we pressed on, laughing at the absurdity. Emerged dripping but triumphant, straight into the cottage's snug lounge for a roast and log fire crackle. Those first impressions lingered: 2 Faraway Fields isn't just a base; it's a launchpad for weather-whipped walks that remind you Cornwall's magic is in the mud and the mizzle. Three days in, and I was already plotting a return – mug mishap be damned. |
