About Cornwall
I finally made it to Truro after what felt like the scenic route from hell, thanks to my sat-nav deciding to play silly buggers halfway through Devon. Picture this: me, belting along the A30 with the windows down, singing along to some dodgy 90s playlist, when the bloody thing announces we're taking a "shortcut" through a maze of hedge-lined lanes narrower than my ex's patience. Cue a minor heart attack as I squeeze past an oncoming tractor, scraping the wing mirror on a particularly enthusiastic bramble bush. No real damage, just a few scratches and my pride taking a dent – classic me, turning a three-hour drive into a four-hour comedy of errors. But hey, that's Cornwall for you; it reels you in with those twisting roads that promise adventure, even if it's just swearing at foliage.

By the time I pulled up to the 2 Bed Lodge just outside Truro, the sun was dipping low, casting that golden glow over the rolling fields that scream "proper Cornish countryside." The lodge itself is one of those cosy little numbers tucked away in a peaceful spot, perfect for forgetting the world's gone mad. I fumbled with the key safe – fingers still tingling from gripping the wheel like a vice – and stepped inside, half expecting a broom cupboard after my chaotic journey. Blimey, was I wrong. It opened up into this warm, welcoming haven: exposed beams overhead, a wood-burning stove begging for a fire (though it was balmy enough not to need it yet), and a kitchen that looked like it could whip up a full-on pasty feast without breaking a sweat. The smell of fresh linen hit me first, mingled with that faint sea-tang breeze sneaking through the cracked window – Truro's close enough to feel the coast without the full-on holidaymaker scrum.

I dumped my bags and did the full nosey tour. Two bedrooms, both snug as a bug, with those plush beds that make you want to dive straight in. The master one's got this massive window framing views of the garden and distant hills – I stood there for ages, just breathing it in, thinking how I'd been hunched over a desk in London this time last month, dreaming of exactly this. Downstairs, the lounge is pure chill-out central: squishy sofas, a telly for rainy days (fingers crossed for sun), and a dining table sturdy enough for a cream tea spread. I chuckled to myself spotting the quirky touches – a stack of board games by the shelf, including one that looked suspiciously like it had seen a few rowdy family nights. Made me miss mates back home, but in a good way, the kind that reminds you why you do these solo jaunts.

First impressions? Absolute gold dust. After the arrival palaver, sinking into that armchair with a cuppa from the well-stocked kitchen felt like hugging an old friend. I stepped out the back door to the private patio – oh mate, the peace! Birds twittering, a cheeky robin eyeing me up for crumbs, and not a soul in sight. It's that rare spot where you're minutes from Tr uro's high street buzz – think independent shops, the cathedral looming like a postcard, and the odd pasty van for emergency scran – but worlds away from it all. I wandered the garden a bit, spotting wildflowers and a hammock swaying gently, already plotting lazy mornings with coffee and the paper.

That little mirror mishap on the drive? Best thing that could've happened. It shook off the city cobwebs and made arriving here feel like striking gold. As I watched the sunset paint the sky pink over the fields, mug in hand, I had one of those quiet moments: life's too short for perfect journeys when the destination's this cracking. Three days in this gem of a lodge, and I'm already plotting a return. Cornwall, you've got me hooked – scratches and all.
