About Cornwall
I finally made it to that cosy 2 Bed Lodge in Torpoint after a bit of a faff on the drive down from Plymouth. Picture this: I'm trundling along the A374, windows down, Proper Cornish pasty in hand from a services stop, when—splat!—a seagull decides my windscreen needs a fresh coat of paint. Not just any splat, mind; this was a full-on Jackson Pollock job, right in my line of sight. I pull over near the Torpoint Ferry, laughing at myself as I scrub it off with a soggy napkin, thinking, "Welcome to Cornwall, you daft sod—nature's way of saying slow down." By the time I crossed that chain ferry—watching it chug across the Tamar like a faithful old tug—it was late afternoon, and the sun was dipping low over the water, turning everything golden.

Pulling up to the lodge felt like stumbling on a secret hideaway. Tucked just off the quiet lanes of Torpoint, it's one of those log cabins that looks like it belongs in a fairy tale, all wooden cladding and nestled in a wee glade with ferns brushing the windows. No grand entrance, just a gravel drive and a cheeky robin eyeing me up as I unloaded my bags. First impressions? Pure bliss. The key turned smooth as, and inside, it was all warm wood panelling, a compact kitchen that screamed "cook up a storm," and those two bedrooms with views straight out to the trees. I dumped my stuff, cracked open a tin of cider from the offy, and flopped on the sofa, already forgetting the gull fiasco.

But here's the magic: I didn't plan a thing. With three days ahead, I figured I'd just wander, let the lanes lead me. First morning, I hopped in the car—no sat-nav, mind, I wanted that proper lost feeling—and veered off down a skinny B-road towards the waterside. Ended up at a hidden pebble beach near Torpoint's edge, one of those spots you only find by missing a turn. Not a soul around, just me, the lap of the Tamar, and a thermos of tea. I skimmed stones for ages, chuckling at how rubbish I am—most plopped like lead weights—then spotted an old WWII pillbox half-buried in the dunes. Clambered up for a nose: graffiti from the '80s, sea views for miles, and that thrill of discovering something forgotten. Felt like a kid again, proper hidden gem.

Afternoon took me deeper into the back lanes, past Mount Edgcumbe's outer edges where the paths get wild. Turned left at a whim onto a footpath signposted "to the ferry ruins," and blimey, what a find. An abandoned slipway, overgrown with brambles, right by the water. I sat on a driftwood log, munching a cream tea scone I'd grabbed from a Torpoint bakery (clotted cream first, obviously), watching fishing boats bob. No tourists, no chatter—just the wind in the oaks and that salty tang. Got chatting to a local dog-walker who tipped me off about a smugglers' cove further along, accessible only at low tide. Off I went, slipping on seaweed, heart racing like an adventure film, emerging at this tiny inlet with caves that echoed my whoops. Laughed out loud when a wave soaked my trainers—serves me right for being a townie.

That first full day wrapped with sunset from the lodge's garden, pint in hand, reflecting on how daft it is to always chase the big sights. Rame Head's all very well, but these accidental detours—the pillbox solitude, the smugglers' whispers— that's the real Cornwall. Staying put in that lodge let me peel back the layers, find the quiet pulse. By evening, feet up by the wood burner (self-lit, natch), I was hooked. Who needs itineraries when getting lost feels this good?
