About Cornwall
Pulling up to the 2 Bed Lodge In Pensilva felt like stumbling into a hug from an old mate. Tucked away in this quiet corner of Cornwall, it's one of those proper lodges that screams "get away from it all" without being pretentious. The owner had left the key in a clever little lockbox by the door – no faffing about with check-in times – and as I pushed it open, the first waft of fresh, woodsy air hit me. Inside, it was cosier than a grandma's armchair: low-beamed ceilings, a wood-burning stove begging for a fire (though it was a balmy evening), and those plush sofas that practically swallowed you whole. The kitchen was a dream for a lazy holidaymaker like me – shiny hob, a fridge stocked with the basics (milk, butter, even a cheeky bottle of local cider as a welcome), and windows framing views of the rolling fields that stretch out towards the woods. I dumped my bags and just stood there, grinning like an idiot. First impressions? Blimey, it was love at first sight. The two bedrooms were upstairs, each with that crisp, hotel-like bedding but way more character – think exposed beams and little touches like handmade quilts. Mine had a window overlooking the garden, where birds were already flitting about in the dusk. The bathroom was spotless, with a powerful shower that blasted away the drive's stresses in seconds, and fluffy towels that smelled of lavender. Outside, the decked area was perfect for al fresco cups of tea, with a couple of loungers and a BBQ setup. I fired up the kettle straight away (proper British priority) and took my mug out there, watching the sun dip behind the trees. Pensilva itself is this hidden gem of a village – just a short wander down the lane to the local shop for pasties or a pint at the Cheesewring Hotel pub, where the barman knows everyone's name. No tourist hordes here; it's proper locals' turf, with that gentle hum of community life. That minor arrival kerfuffle had me reflecting a bit as I settled in with my cider. I'm always rushing, aren't I? Chasing the perfect holiday snapshot on Instagram, when really, it's these little mishaps that make the memories stick. Bashing the mirror forced me to slow down, breathe in the Cornwall air – salty from the nearby coast, earthy from the moors – and appreciate the lodge's quiet magic. By nightfall, I'd lit a few candles (they were thoughtfully provided), cranked some Radio 6 on the smart speaker, and sprawled on the sofa with a book. No plans beyond savouring this spot. Three days here, and already I knew the first one's etched in gold – chaos and all. Can't wait to see what tomorrow brings, but honestly, this first taste? Pure Cornish bliss. |
