About Cornwall
I’ll never forget the drive down to Liskeard for my three-day jaunt in Cornwall – a proper road trip from up country, dodging the usual M5 crawl and those cheeky caravans hogging the outside lane. We’d booked this cracking 2 Bed Lodge In Liskeard, a cosy little number tucked away in the countryside near the town, perfect for unwinding without the tourist hordes. But about 20 minutes from our turn-off, disaster struck: I’d packed the sat-nav in the boot by mistake, and my phone decided to throw a wobbly with no signal. Cue me swearing at a crumpled Ordnance Survey map while my mate Dave laughed his socks off from the passenger seat. We ended up taking a wrong turn onto some narrow, hedge-lined lane that twisted like a Cornish pasty. Bloody brilliant start, eh? Little did we know, that mishap was the best thing that could’ve happened – it led us straight to the hidden gems that made our first impressions of the lodge and surrounds utterly magical.

Pulling up to the lodge after our unplanned detour, I was knackered but buzzing. The place is a proper gem itself – a snug wooden lodge with a veranda overlooking rolling fields, just a stone’s throw from Liskeard’s quiet edges. No blaring traffic, just birdsong and the faint moo of cows in the distance. We tumbled out, bags in hand, and the first thing that hit me was the fresh air, thick with that salty Cornish tang even inland. Unlocked the door (keys hidden under a flowerpot, classic), and inside it was all warm wood beams, a compact kitchen that screamed “rustic charm,” and two bedrooms with views that made you want to flop straight onto the bed. Dave cracked open a couple of tins while I surveyed the lounge – squishy sofas, a wood burner begging for logs, and French windows spilling onto a private patio. First impressions? Spot on for a lazy getaway. But it was those accidental discoveries wandering from the door that stole the show.

Shaking off the drive, we fancied a leg-stretch before settling in. No grand plans, just following our noses down the lodge’s winding track. That’s when the magic kicked in – we stumbled on a tucked-away footpath snaking through ancient oak woods, the sort you’d miss if you weren’t faffing about with a dodgy map. Sunlight dappled through the leaves, and within minutes, we’d found this secret dell with a babbling brook perfect for skimmin’ stones. Not a soul around; it felt like our own private Cornwall. Laughing about my nav fail, we pressed on, emerging onto a wildflower meadow that backed right onto the lodge grounds. Hidden gem number one, by pure fluke.

Emboldened, we looped back via the lodge’s rear garden path, which – who knew? – led to a forgotten orchard heavy with scrumped apples (well, we asked the neighbour later, all above board). Munching on the juiciest Bramleys, we spotted a weathered stone bridge over a tinkling stream, arched like something from a Tolkien tale. Sat there for ages, feet dangling, watching trout dart about. Dave quipped it was better than any Eden Project hype – and he’s not wrong; these off-the-beaten-track spots were the real deal, just yards from our doorstep.

As the afternoon sun dipped, we retreated to the veranda with pasties from Liskeard’s market (grabbed en route, steaming hot and flaky). Sipping tea, I had a quiet moment of reflection: how often do we charge about chasing Instagram hotspots, missing the quiet joys right under our noses? That nav cock-up forced us to get lost, and blimey, what a gift. First day at the lodge wasn’t about ticking boxes; it was serendipity at its finest – brookside picnics, orchard raids, and paths unseen. Can’t wait to “lose” myself there again.
