About Cornwall
I finally made it to 10 Faraway Fields after what felt like the scenic route from hell, crammed into my little Fiat with the sat-nav having a proper tantrum. Picture this: I'd set off from Liskeard bright and early, buzzing about my three-day jaunt in Cornwall, only for the bloody thing to direct me down a single-track lane that narrowed into a Cornish hedge maze. Branches scraping the sides like an unwanted car wash, and then – splat – a rogue pheasant decides to play chicken right in front of me. No harm done to the bird (it scarpered off in a feathery huff), but my nerves were jangling, and I arrived at the cottage with mud-splattered trousers and a face like a slapped haddock. Typical me, turning a 10-minute drive into a low-budget rally stage.

Pulling up to 10 Faraway Fields near Looe, though, all that chaos melted away faster than a pasty in the sun. Tucked into a peaceful spot just a stone's throw from the coast, this place is the epitome of that proper Cornish hideaway – a cosy two-bedroom cottage with a garden that practically begs you to flop into a deckchair with a cuppa. The owners had left a welcome basket on the doorstep: fresh scones, clotted cream, strawberry jam, and a bottle of local cider that screamed "relax, you daft sod." I chuckled to myself, wiping the last smudges of rural adventure off my jeans, and stepped inside. First impressions? Bloody brilliant.

The living room hit me like a warm hug – low-beamed ceilings, a wood-burning stove begging for a fire (even if it was a balmy May day), and squishy sofas that looked lived-in rather than showroom pristine. I dumped my bags and beelined for the kitchen, all shiny with that farmhouse charm: Aga cooker humming away, herbs on the windowsill, and views out to the fields that stretched lazy and green. Made myself a brew straight off, slathered a scone with cream and jam (devoured it in three bites – who needs manners on holiday?), and just stood there, soaking it in. Outside, the garden was a riot of colour – lavender buzzing with bees, a little patio with bistro chairs perfect for al fresco breakfasts, and that faint tang of sea salt in the air reminding you Cornwall's wild edge is never far.

Wandering upstairs, the bedrooms were pure snug heaven. Our double had a massive bed piled with feather pillows, crisp white sheets, and windows framing the rolling countryside. The en-suite was compact but spotless, with a powerful shower that blasted away the drive's stresses in seconds. I flopped onto the bed for a moment, staring at the beams overhead, and had one of those gentle "what am I doing with my life?" reflections. Back home, it's all rush and deadlines; here, time stretches out like the horizon. Why do I let the little mishaps – like that pheasant ambush – rattle me so? This cottage was already whispering that it's the simple spots like this that recharge the soul.

By late afternoon, I'd shaken off the arrival farce completely. Nipped down to the nearby footpath for a quick stroll – the kind that leads you to clifftop views over Looe Bay without breaking a sweat – and returned to fire up the barbecue in the garden. As the sun dipped low, painting everything golden, I cracked open that cider and toasted my daft self. 10 Faraway Fields isn't just a stay; it's the sort of place that turns a bumpy start into the best story of your trip. If you're after Cornwall without the crowds, this is your spot – pheasants optional.
