About Cornwall
I’ll never forget the drive down to Newquay for my three-day jaunt at 1 Ocean Gate – a cheeky little mishap set the tone right from the off. I’d packed my ancient SatNav, thinking it’d save me faffing with phone signals in Cornwall’s twisty lanes, but the bloomin’ thing decided to reroute me via a farmer’s field just outside town. There I was, wedged behind a herd of cows, honking my horn like a daft tourist while the farmer ambled over with a pitchfork and a grin wider than Fistral Beach. “Lost, are ya, love?” he chuckled, his accent thick as clotted cream. Turned out he was heading the same way – to Newquay – and waved me through with a farmer’s wave that felt like an official escort. By the time I pulled up to the cottage, I was half an hour late but buzzing with that proper Cornish welcome.

1 Ocean Gate sits right on the edge of things, perched with sea views that hit you like a gust off the Atlantic – you can practically taste the salt from the doorstep. It’s one of those classic Newquay spots, stone-built and cosy, steps from the beach without the holiday camp clamour. I arrived mid-afternoon, bags in hand, and who’s the first character I meet but Mrs Jenkins, the neighbour next door, peering over her garden wall with binoculars in hand. “Whale watching?” I joked, dropping my keys in the gravel. She cackled – a proper belly laugh – and confessed she was actually spotting surfers. “Best show in town, duck,” she said, thrusting a Tupperware of her homemade saffron buns into my mitts. “You’ll need sustenance for this wind.” Turned out Mrs J’s been here 40 years, seen every storm and every surf comp. Over a brew on her patio – mine overlooking the crashing waves from Ocean Gate’s terrace – she regaled me with tales of the ’80s Newquay rave scene. “Hippy surfers everywhere, bonfires on the beach till dawn. Your lot now with your yoga mats!” I nearly choked on my bun laughing. Proper quirky, that one – the kind of local who makes you feel like you’ve stumbled into a sitcom.

Strolling down to Towan Beach that first evening, I bumped into Madge behind the beach kiosk, doling out pasties like they were gold dust. She’s all wild silver curls and a voice like a foghorn: “First time in Kernow, eh? You look like you need a proper pasty, not that rubbish from the motorway.” I mumbled something about the cow incident, and she roared, slapping the counter. “Classic! My Bert had that with sheep last week. Cornwall’s got a way of herding you in.” We chatted for ages – her banging on about the best low-tide rock pools (just a stone’s throw from the cottage) and how the seals off the headland nick your chips if you’re not vigilant. “Cheeky buggers, those pinnipeds,” she winked. I grabbed two pasties and headed back as the sun dipped, golden over the ocean, feeling like I’d known her forever.

The next morning, while nipping to the local shop for milk, I got collared by Terry the fisherman, leaning on his van outside with a tackle box bigger than my boot. “Ocean Gate, is it? Grand spot – caught me biggest pollock off there in ’98.” His eyes twinkled as he launched into a yarn about outrunning a squall in his dinghy, complete with dramatic arm waves that nearly knocked over a pensioner’s trolley. “Life’s too short for boring holidays,” he declared, slapping my back. “Get out on that beach, lad – waves are pumping!” I did, later that day, paddling at the water’s edge, watching the surfers carve up the swells while seagulls squawked overhead like feathered hecklers.

Chatting with these locals – Mrs J with her binoculars, Madge’s pasty wisdom, Terry’s salty tales – it struck me, sat there on the cottage deck with the sea roaring approval. In the rush of everyday life back home, I forget how these chance encounters ground you, make a place feel like home in hours. No grand adventures needed; just quirky Cornish folk and their stories, turning first impressions into something golden. Can’t wait to go back.
