About Cornwall
Pulling up to 1 Horizon View just before sunset was pure magic. Tucked on the edge of Liskeard, this cosy lodge overlooks the rolling fields towards the coast – you can almost taste the sea air from the decking. It's one of those spots where Cornwall's wild beauty sneaks up on you; no grand cliffs in sight, just gentle hills dotted with sheep and the faint hum of the countryside. We tumbled out, bags everywhere, and the kids immediately claimed the hot tub as their kingdom. "Dad, it's massive!" yelled little Ollie, peering into the bubbling depths like he'd discovered Atlantis. I couldn't blame him – after that drive, sinking into it later felt like heaven. Stepping inside, the place wrapped us up like a warm pasty. It's all open-plan loveliness: a cracking wood-burner (we got it going straight away for that lodge-life glow), a kitchen stocked with everything you'd need for a fry-up, and squishy sofas begging for a collapse. The bedrooms are snug – ours had this massive bed with views straight out to the horizon, hence the name, I suppose. We unpacked amid the usual pandemonium: socks in the fridge, toys under the beds, the dog shedding fur like confetti. But honestly, that's the joy of it – no posh hotel stiffness, just us lot making it home for three days. First impressions? Blissfully unpretentious. That evening, we cracked open a bottle of Cornish cider (nabbed from a farm shop en route) and fired up the barbecue on the deck. The sun dipped low, painting the sky in those mad pinks and oranges Cornwall does so well, and we munched on sausages while the kids chased each other round the garden. A cheeky robin hopped up, eyeing our scraps – I swear it was sizing me up for a pasty heist. "Don't let it nick the buns, Dad!" giggled Ellie. Laughter echoed as the hot tub steamed invitingly; we took turns, me and the missus sneaking a quiet soak while the kids roasted marshmallows over the barbie flames. Pure simple pleasures – no itinerary, no rush, just the crackle of wood and that salty breeze whispering promises of beach days ahead. Wandering the immediate area the next morning sealed it. A short stroll revealed typical Cornish charm: hedgerows bursting with blackberries (we picked a punnet, ignoring the odd nettle sting), and views down to the coast path near Looe – close enough to hear the waves but private enough for lodge life. We nipped to a local farm shop for cream teas – scones still warm, clotted cream thicker than my patience on a school run. Back at the lodge, chaos reigned again: Ollie tipped his jam everywhere, turning the kitchen into a crime scene. "Family holiday badge earned," I muttered, scrubbing away with a grin. Reflecting on it now, arriving at 1 Horizon View hit me with a gentle nudge – life's too short for manic schedules. Amid the seagull splats and sticky fingers, it's these pockets of nothing-much that recharge you. The lodge isn't flashy, but it's got heart: space to breathe, views to lose yourself in, and enough hot tub therapy to melt away the world. If you're after a chilled family escape in Cornwall's quieter corners, this is your spot. Can't wait to return – minus the bird bomb, hopefully. |
