About Cornwall
I finally made it to that cosy 1 Bed Lodge in St. Wenn after a bit of a faff on the drive down from Devon. Picture this: I'm trundling along those narrow Cornish lanes, past endless hedgerows bursting with wildflowers, when—splat!—a rogue seagull decides my windscreen needs a fresh coat of paint. Proper Jackson Pollock job, it was. I pulled over near a farm gate, wiped it off with a soggy tissue from the glovebox, chuckling to myself about how that's just classic British holiday vibes. Nothing says "welcome to Cornwall" like bird bombsite number one.

Pulling up to the lodge that first afternoon, I was knackered but buzzing. Tucked away in a peaceful spot just outside St. Wenn village, it's one of those proper little hideaways—a snug one-bed timber lodge with a veranda that screams "put your feet up and forget the world." The host had left fresh milk and scones on the side, which was a right treat after the road. I dumped my bags, brewed a cuppa, and stepped out to take in the view: rolling fields stretching towards the coast, with the faint hum of the countryside. St. Wenn's got that timeless Cornish charm—tiny parish church, a pub down the lane, and not a hint of tourist tat. Perfect for switching off.

First impressions? Blissful solitude. But being me, I couldn't just sit there. The weather was doing its classic Cornwall dance—bright blue skies one minute, so I laced up my boots for a wander. There's a cracking network of footpaths right from the lodge door, weaving through farmland and down to hidden valleys. I headed out along the lane towards the nearby woods, about a mile off, feeling like I was in a Proper Jobs episode. The sun was beating down, warming my face, and I spotted a buzzard circling overhead. Proper magic.

By the time I'd looped back for a pasty from the village shop—devoured on the veranda with a pint of local ale—the clouds rolled in like they owned the place. Typical! Day two dawned misty, so I adapted: a gentle yomp across dew-soaked meadows to St. Wenn's holy well, tucked in a shady dell not five minutes' stroll away. It's this ancient stone spring, bubbling away mysteriously—felt like stepping into folklore. But mid-morning, the heavens opened. Rain hammered down, turning paths to mudslides. I sheltered under a massive oak, laughing at my sodden socks, thinking, "Only in Britain do you pack factor 50 and wellies in the same bag."

That afternoon, undeterred, I waited out the squall and struck out again as the sun peeked through. A proper hike this time—two miles or so along clifftop-ish trails towards the unseen sea (you catch glimpses on a clear day). The wind whipped up, turning it into a bracing adventure, with gorse bushes scratching at my legs and the air thick with salt. Slipping on a puddle (note to self: invest in better grip), I ended up caked in clay, proper daft. But oh, the payoff—standing there as rainbows arched over the fields, I had one of those moments. You know, the gentle nudge from life: "Slow down, mate. This is what recharging looks like." No signal on my phone, no rush—just me, the weather's whims, and the lodge waiting with its wood burner flickering.

By evening, back inside with stew on the hob, I reflected on how those hikes and weather switches made the first day-and-a-bit unforgettable. Cornwall doesn't do predictable; it throws curveballs, and you dodge or dance. That lodge? Spot on for it—cosy base for whatever the skies chuck at you. Can't wait to go back and let the paths lead me astray again.
