About Cornwall
I finally made it to that charming 1 Bed Lodge in Redruth after a bit of a faff on the drive down from up country. Picture this: I'm trundling along the A30, past Bodmin Moor, with the radio blaring some classic Radio 2, when – whoops – I take a wrong turn onto one of those narrow Cornish lanes that twist like a pasty that's been left in the sun too long. Ended up in a muddy farm track, reversing into a hedge while a couple of sheep gave me proper side-eye. Laughable now, but at the time, I was cursing my sat-nav like it was plotting against me. Still, no harm done, just a smudge of cow muck on the bumper, and suddenly there I was, pulling up to this snug little lodge tucked away in west Cornwall, all wood-beamed and welcoming under a sky threatening a proper Atlantic drizzle.

First impressions? Bloody brilliant. The place is proper cosy – think one bedroom with a bed that looks like it could swallow you whole in the best way, a compact kitchenette stocked with all the essentials (tea, obviously, and a few pasties in the welcome basket), and a lounge that's basically an invitation to flop. It's one of those spots where you step inside and instantly feel the weight of the world lift off your shoulders. No grand entrance, no fuss – just a key in the door and that faint scent of woodsmoke from the wood burner, even though it was a mild September day. I dumped my bag, kicked off my wellies, and thought, "Right, this is it. Three days of sweet sod-all."

The garden sealed the deal. Overgrown in the loveliest way, with a rickety bench overlooking a wild bit of greenery that backed onto fields – none of your manicured nonsense, just proper Cornish chaos with ferns and foxgloves nodding in the breeze. I cracked open a book (some dog-eared Poldark novel I'd grabbed for the vibe) and spent the first afternoon parked there, sipping builder's tea from a chipped mug. The joy of doing bugger all hit me like a warm pasty fresh from the oven. No itinerary, no rushing – just me, the birds chirping away, and the occasional rumble of a tractor in the distance. Light drizzle? Bring it on; it pattered on the leaves like nature's white noise machine.

Wandering out for a gentle potter that evening felt like the perfect lazy add-on. Redruth's only a hop away – five minutes in the car, if that – and I nipped down to the high street for a mooch. Grabbed some proper clotted cream fudge from a little independents shop, nodded hello to locals in their woolly hats (even in September, mind), and ambled back with a carrier bag swinging. No big hikes or tourist traps; just enough to stretch the legs and remind yourself Cornwall's magic is in these tiny, unhurried moments. Back at the lodge, I lit that wood burner anyway – because why not? – and curled up with my book as the flames danced. Dinner was a lazy affair: beans on toast, elevated by the view through the window of the garden fading into twilight.

By nightfall, as I lay in that gloriously soft bed listening to the hush of the countryside, I had a bit of a reflective moment. Life back home's all rush and deadlines – emails pinging, to-do lists breeding like rabbits. Here? It was a gentle nudge that slowing down isn't slacking; it's essential. That first day set the tone for the whole three: pure, unadulterated bliss in doing very little. If you're after a bolthole to recharge without the fanfare, this Redruth lodge is your spot. Can't recommend it enough.
