About Cornwall
I finally made it to that cheeky little 1 Bed Lodge in Little Petherick after what felt like the scenic route from hell. We'd piled into the car in Paddington, me, my partner and our two sprogs, full of pasty dreams and zero traffic patience. Cornwall's calling, innit? But about 20 minutes from the turn-off near Wadebridge, I managed to splatter the windscreen with a rogue takeaway coffee – right in the middle of a downpour. Cue me swearing like a proper navvie while the kids howled with laughter from the back. "Dad's turned into a human windscreen wiper!" Brilliant start, that. We pulled over by some sodden cows, wiped it down with a knackered tissue, and carried on, windows steaming up like a sauna.

Rocking up to the lodge just as the sun peeked through the clouds over the River Camel estuary was pure magic. It's tucked away in this lush valley spot, proper hidden gem vibes – think rolling fields, the creek glittering below, and not a soul in sight. The SatNav had us on those narrow lanes that make you grip the wheel like it's a lifeline, hedges brushing the mirrors, but emerging into the clearing felt like stumbling into a postcard. The lodge itself? Compact and cosy, like a posh garden shed on steroids. One bedroom up top with a snug double bed piled high with quilts, and downstairs a wee kitchen-diner-lounge combo that's all wood beams and quirky charm. No faffing about with massive spaces here – it's lodge life, designed for kicking back, not showing off.

First impressions hit hard as we tumbled out the car, bags everywhere. The kids bolted straight for the decking area, eyes wide at the view down to the tidal creek where little boats bobbed about. "Can we paddle, Mum?" they begged, but I clocked the mud and thought, nah, not on day one. We unloaded amid the chaos – picnic hamper spilling pasties onto the grass (proper Cornish ones from the local bakery en route, naturally), wellies clashing with the gravel, and me realising I'd forgotten the bloody milk. Classic me. But that's the joy of these spots: no pressure, just faffing about in the fresh air, seagulls squawking overhead like nosy neighbours.

Stepping inside, the warmth wrapped round us like a hug. A little wood burner was already set (cheers to the hosts), and the kitchen had all the bits – kettle on, tea brewing, and a window right over the valley. Sat there with mugs in hand, munching on clotted cream fudge we'd grabbed from a farm shop five minutes up the road near St Issey, watching the light dance on the water. It's these simple pleasures that get me – no telly blaring, just the hum of nature and the odd tractor rumbling by. The loo was tiny but spotless, shower hot as brass, and that private hot tub on the deck? Tempting, but we saved it for later, what with the drizzle threatening.

As the afternoon wore on, we wandered the short path down to the creek – proper family amble, splashing in rock pools, spotting herons and the odd crab scuttling off. The lodge felt like our own private bolthole, far enough from anywhere to breathe, close enough for a pint at the nearby pub if needed. Dinner was chaos in the best way: me burning toast while trying to whip up beans on the hob, kids arguing over who got the comfiest chair, all of us laughing till our sides hurt. Lying in bed that night, estuary whispering outside, I had a proper moment of reflection. Life's mad rush back home? Forgotten already. Here, in this little lodge with its wonky charm and valley hush, it's just us, mud on our boots, and the simple thrill of doing bugger all brilliantly. Three days of this? Sign me up forever.
