About Bath
Pulling up to Norland felt like stumbling into a hug from an old mate. It's one of those proper cosy spots—a detached wooden lodge with a thatched roof that screams "kick your shoes off and stay a while." The owners had left the key in the door (cheers for that trust!), and as I stepped inside, the first thing that hit me was the smell of fresh linen and woodsmoke from the log burner. Compact but spot-on: open-plan living with a squishy sofa begging to be lounged on, a kitchenette stocked with tea, coffee, and those posh biscuits you pretend not to scoff in one go. Up a few steps, the bedroom was a haven—king-size bed piled high with pillows, and an en-suite that somehow felt luxurious without trying too hard. Outside, the private patio overlooked a shared garden that's more wildflower meadow than manicured lawn, with birds cheeping away like they owned the place. First impressions? Pure bliss for a lazy sod like me. Day one, I dumped my bag and cracked open a book I'd been meaning to read for months—some light historical fiction about Bath's Georgian heyday. No itinerary, no alarms; just me, a mug of builder's tea, and the gentle patter of rain on the roof. I spent hours there on the sofa, feet up, occasionally glancing out at the garden where the sun was peeking through. It's funny how you forget how good it feels to switch off. Back home, I'm always rushing—emails, errands, the lot. Here, time stretched out like warm toffee. By afternoon, I fancied a gentle potter about. Norland's brilliantly placed for that—just a short stroll to some of Bath's quieter lanes, away from the Circus crowds. I ambled down to the Kennet and Avon Canal, barely half a mile off, and watched narrowboats chug by, their owners waving like we'd known each other forever. Grabbed a pasty from a nearby bakery (proper Cornish job, flaky and steaming), and plonked myself on a bench to munch it slowly, people-watching the joggers and dog-walkers. No rush back; the joy was in the dawdle. Back at the lodge, I fired up the BBQ on the patio—nothing fancy, just sausages and a bit of salad—and watched the sunset paint the garden gold. The hot tub was calling, but I saved that treat; instead, I wrapped up in a blanket, book in hand, listening to the evening hush. That first evening, as I sat there with a glass of wine, I had one of those quiet moments of reflection. Life's a whirl, innit? We're all chasing the next thing, but what if the best bit is this—nowt but the creak of the lodge settling, the scent of damp earth, and the realisation that doing very little is doing a lot for the soul. Norland nailed that first-day magic: arrival felt like permission to exhale. Day two dawned misty, perfect for more of the same. I ventured a touch further, maybe a mile's wander to Alexandra Park for its sweeping views over the city—Bath laid out like a postcard, all honey stone and Georgian elegance. But I wasn't climbing any hills; just a slow loop through the trees, breathing in that crisp air, then back to base for elevenses and a nap. The garden became my playground: lounging on the outdoor furniture, flicking through a magazine, spotting butterflies on the lavender. Lunch was a lazy affair—bread, cheese, and whatever was in the fridge—eaten al fresco while the world ticked on without me. By the third morning, I was properly hooked on this slow-lane life. A final gentle explore took me along the canal path again, past little locks and weeping willows, picking up a newspaper for the lodge coffee table. No grand plans, just soaking in Bath's understated charm—the way the light hits the rooftops, the distant chime of church bells. Returning to Norland felt like coming home. I packed with a sigh, but not before one last soak in the garden's peace, book forgotten as I just... was. Three days of sweet doing nothing at Norland? Absolute gold. If you're after a cosy reset in Bath, this is your spot—first impressions don't get much better. |
