  • Castle Combe Village

A pretty village nestled in the Cotswolds, there is plenty of English charm to be found in Castle Combe. It's regularly used as a filming location and a visit makes it clear why. There’s plenty of local shops and cafes serving local fare and accommodation is available for overnight stays, many of which are dog friendly.

About Bath
I finally made it to Bath after a bit of a faff on the train from London—nothing major, just the usual signal failure that turned my smooth two-hour journey into a three-hour slog with a packed carriage full of overheated commuters. By the time Paddington spat me out and I'd hopped on that final scenic ride through the Somerset countryside, I was knackered, my rucksack digging into my shoulders like an unwelcome hitchhiker. But as the train pulled into Bath Spa station, the sight of those honey-coloured Georgian terraces peeking through the drizzle lifted my spirits. I was here for three days at the Delaford Suite, a cosy little gem I'd booked on a whim, craving that proper English cottage vibe right in the heart of the city.

Grabbing a quick black cab from the station—because lugging luggage uphill after that delay? No thank you—I rattled off the address in the North East Somerset bit of Bath. The driver, a cheery chap with a thick West Country burr, chuckled when he heard it. "Lovely spot, that. Just mind the one-ways round there." Famous last words. We zoomed past the Roman Baths' golden dome, the Abbey's spire piercing the grey sky, and into the warren of narrow lanes that make Bath feel like a Jane Austen novel come to life. But oh, the mishap: halfway up a cobbled street, the cab spluttered to a halt behind a delivery van blocking the road. "Bloody typical," the driver muttered, hopping out to have a word. There I was, steaming cup of station coffee in hand, spilling it down my jumper as I juggled my bag and paid up. Chaos reigned for a good ten minutes while we rerouted on foot, me trailing behind like a lost tourist, dodging cyclists and puddles. Light relief came when a passing local quipped, "Welcome to Bath, love—traffic's our Roman ruin!" I laughed, because what else can you do? It was the perfect absurd start to my getaway, turning potential grumpiness into a story I'd retell for weeks.

Finally, huffing up the last incline, there it was: the Delaford Suite, tucked into a charming Georgian townhouse just a stone's throw from the buzz of central Bath. No sprawling estate, mind—just a smart, self-contained bolthole with that quintessential English elegance. The host, a friendly sort called Emma, met me at the door with a beaming smile and a proper cuppa, apologising profusely for the street shenanigans as if she'd orchestrated the van herself. "Keys are yours now—make yourself at home." Stepping inside was like sinking into a warm hug. The open-plan living space unfolded before me: low-beamed ceiling (watch your head, I nearly didn't), a squishy leather sofa piled with cushions, and a wood-burning stove begging for a fire on chillier evenings. The kitchenette gleamed with all the mod cons— Nespresso machine, Smeg fridge stocked with local milk and biscuits—but it felt lived-in, not sterile, with fresh flowers from the nearby Botanical Gardens adding a splash of colour.

Up the creaky stairs (more beams, more ducking), the bedroom was a dream: king-sized bed draped in crisp white linens, views straight out to the rooftops and a glimpse of the Avon Valley. The en-suite bathroom? Pure bliss—a rainfall shower that washed away the train grime in seconds, fluffy towels that could swallow you whole. First impressions? Utterly wonderful, mishap and all. I flopped onto the bed, staring at the ceiling, and had one of those gentle moments of self-reflection: how often do I barrel through life without pausing? Here, in this snug Bath hideaway, the arrival kerfuffle forced me to slow down, breathe, and appreciate the magic of stumbling into something special. That evening, I wandered just five minutes downhill to Pulteney Bridge for fish and chips overlooking the weir, the city lights twinkling like approval. Back at the suite, I lit the stove, cracked open a bottle of Somerset cider, and thought: yeah, this three-day escape is already legendary. Can't wait to explore more tomorrow, but honestly, this first chaotic whirl has me hooked.
