About Sussex
Pulling up to Willow Pod that first afternoon felt like slipping into a hug. Tucked away in a quiet spot just outside Arundel, it's this cosy little pod—think wooden haven with a pitched roof, all nestled in its own private garden. The host had left the key in the door with a welcoming note and a bottle of local prosecco chilling in the fridge. I dumped my bag, kicked off my trainers, and just... breathed. After the chaos of city life, this was pure bliss. No itinerary, no rush—just the joy of doing sod all, properly. First impressions? It's tiny but perfect, like a grown-up den. The open-plan space inside is all warm wood tones, a squishy sofa begging you to sink in, and a kitchenette stocked with everything you'd need for lazy brekkies. Big windows frame the garden, which is the real star. Lush green lawn, flowerbeds bursting with lavender and roses (proper Sussex scents wafting in), and a couple of loungers under a pergola draped in climbers. I cracked open that prosecco, poured a glass, and flopped onto one with a book I'd been meaning to read for months. The sun filtered through the leaves, birds chirping away—honestly, who needs Netflix when you've got this? That evening, I pottered about the garden as the light faded. It's completely private, fenced off so you feel like you've got your own little Eden. I spotted a hammock swaying gently in the breeze—tempting, but I opted for the hot tub instead. Slipping into that bubbling warmth, staring up at the starry sky (so clear out here, no light pollution), I felt every knot of tension melt away. No grand plans for dinner; just cheese, crackers, and more prosecco on the outdoor table, watching bats flit about. It was daft how content I felt doing precisely nothing. Next morning—my second day, but still smack in that honeymoon phase with the place—I woke late to birdsong and the smell of dew. Brewed a coffee, took it out to the garden, and spent hours just reading. The pod's got this sheltered patio that's perfect for it, with views of the hedges buzzing with bees. I wandered the paths, picking a few blackberries from the bushes nearby (wild ones, fat and juicy), and munched them straight off while daydreaming. Later, a gentle stroll into Arundel itself—it's only a short walk or drive away. The town's got that quintessentially English charm: castle looming on the hill, cobbled streets lined with tearooms and antique shops. I grabbed a pasty from the bakery, sat on a bench by the River Arun watching ducks paddle by, and let time stretch out. No rushing from sight to sight; just ambling, savouring the slowness. By day three, Willow Pod had worked its magic. I reflected, hammock-bound with a cuppa, on how rarely I let myself switch off. Work emails? Ignored. Chores? Forgotten. Here, in this pocket of Sussex peace, doing very little felt like the most productive thing imaginable. The garden became my world—napping in the lounger, sketching wildflowers, listening to the rustle of leaves. It's the kind of stay that recharges you without you even trying. If you're craving a proper break, hunt down Willow Pod. Three days of sweet nothing, and I drove home grinning, already plotting a return. |
