About Sussex
First impressions? Blimey, it was love at first sight. The lodge is a proper gem—compact but cracking, with a veranda that screams "put your feet up and breathe." I dumped my bags, brewed a cuppa, and stepped out to take it all in. The air was crisp, that fresh Sussex scent of pine and damp earth hitting me like a tonic. Weather-wise, it started promising: a rare blue-sky morning, not a cloud in sight. I laced up my boots pronto, map in hand (well, phone, but you get me), and headed out for what I reckoned would be the hike of the holiday. Newlands Corner is barely a couple of miles away—proper handy—and it's got these stunning viewpoints over the Weaver's Down valley. I strode off along the woodland paths, feeling like a proper adventurer, birds chirping, sunlight dappling through the trees. Light humour in the air too; I nearly tripped over a rabbit that shot out like it owned the place, muttering "cheeky sod" under my breath. By midday, though, classic British weather decided to gatecrash. One minute I'm striding along the North Downs Way trail, pics of panoramic views on my phone; the next, the sky turns that moody grey, and fat raindrops start pelting down. No warning, just biblical. I ducked under some oaks for shelter, laughing at how I'd packed shorts instead of a full waterproof—idiot. Plans shifted sharpish: my grand loop hike to St Martha's Hill got abbreviated to a muddy scamper back towards the lodge. Slipping and sliding on the clay paths, I embraced the chaos, turning it into a comedy of errors. Who needs dry feet when you've got that invigorating wet-dog smell going on? Huddled back on the veranda under the lodge's overhang, steaming mug in hand, I watched the downpour turn the woods into a misty wonderland. It was one of those moments for a bit of gentle self-reflection—sat there, soaked but strangely content, thinking how these weather whims are what make British breaks so brilliantly unpredictable. You can't plan for it, but that's the joy: adapting on the fly, finding magic in the mizzle. The lodge felt even more inviting now, its warm glow cutting through the gloom like a beacon. Afternoon brought a let-up, clouds parting just enough for another potter. I stuck close, wandering the immediate woodland trails around the property—gentle undulations through ancient trees, spotting deer in the undergrowth. No epic treks this time, just ambling, letting the fresh post-rain air fill my lungs. The weather played nice for a bit, sun peeking out to steam the paths, turning everything lush and green. By evening, as I fired up the lodge's little barbecue (sheltered, mind), I was knackered but buzzing. First day in, and Superior Lodge 4 had already delivered: mishaps, hikes hijacked by rain, and that unbeatable sense of being properly unplugged in Sussex's wild embrace. Can't wait to see what the weather throws tomorrow. |
