About Orchard Lodge.
Bolney is a pretty village in the heart of Sussex, it's history traces back to Saxon times and still has many timber-framed houses from the 16th century. As well as lots of outdoor activities and pursuits, Bolney also has its own award-winning winery that offers guided tours and tastings; just the place to choose a bottle of wine to complement that special dinner. About Sussex
No sooner had I parked the mud-caked car than old Bert shuffled out from the neighbouring cottage, pipe in mouth and a face like a wrinkled walnut. “You the London lad?” he barked, eyeing my reg plates. Turned out Bert’s the unofficial warden of this pocket of Mid-Sussex, a retired railwayman who’s lived here since the war. “Orchard Lodge, eh? Built it meself in ’72, back when Haywards Heath was just fields and foxes.” He thrust a wicker basket at me – “Fresh eggs from my girls, and a pint of scrumpy. Don’t go wasting it on fancy cocktails.” I chuckled, biting back a quip about my zero tolerance for homebrew, and we got chatting over the fence. Bert regaled me with tales of the great storm of ’87 that flattened half the orchard (“Trees down like dominoes, but the lodge stood firm – proper sturdy, she is”). His missus, Doris, popped out then, all curlers and cardie, insisting I try her flapjacks. “None of that shop-bought rubbish,” she winked. Proper characters, the pair of them – made unpacking feel like joining a village panto. By teatime, I’d barely cracked open my bags when the postman, Mick, rocked up on his battered bike. Not your average Royal Mail sort – this one’s a cycling fanatic with calves like hams and a Sussex accent thick as clotted cream. “Heard you were here from Bert,” he grinned, handing over a parcel I wasn’t even expecting. Turns out it was a misdelivered jam from the local WI, but Mick spun it into a yarn about the Haywards Heath Honey Fair last month. “You missed the tug-of-war, mate – our lot from the Plough pub versus the cricket club. Pulled ’em straight into the pond!” We ended up supping tea on the lodge’s patio (lovely spot, that, with views over the dew-kissed garden), him perched on an upturned bucket like he owned the place. Mick’s the king of local lore, rattling on about the hidden Roman road under the B2117 and how the foxes round here nick your bins if you don’t strap ’em down. “Quirky buggers, Sussex folk,” he laughed. “But we’d not swap it for your city smog.” Evening drew in, and as I fired up the lodge’s log burner – crackling away like a dream – who should knock but young Ellie from the farm up the road. Barely out of her teens, with wellies caked in soil and a grin wider than the Downs, she’s the dairy girl who delivers the milk rounds. “Dad says pop in and check you’re settled,” she said, plonking a jug of frothy goodness on the table. Ellie’s a whirlwind, chattering nineteen to the dozen about her prize cow, Daisy, who won rosettes at the Mid-Sussex Show. “She’s a diva, that one – headbutts the gate if her hay’s late.” We swapped stories till the stars popped out; her about ghost sightings in the old mill by the lodge (“Just badgers, probably”), me confessing my city slicker mishaps. Proper heart-warmer, that chat. Sitting there later, pint of Bert’s scrumpy in hand (tasted like rocket fuel, mind), I had a quiet moment of reflection. Amid the laughter and these larger-than-life locals, I realised how knackered I’d been from the daily grind. Orchard Lodge wasn’t just bricks and beams – it was a portal to proper human connection, the kind that sticks with you. Three days in Sussex, and already it felt like home. Can’t wait to see what tomorrow brings with this lot. |
