About Oxfordshire
I’ll never forget the drive to Spindle, our cosy little bolt-hole in the Oxfordshire countryside near Witney. It was a drizzly Friday afternoon in late spring, the kind where the wipers do that annoying intermittent dance, and I’d promised the kids – Ellie, 10, and Max, 7 – we’d be there by teatime. Naturally, I took a wrong turn just outside Burford, ending up on some narrow lane that looked promising until it dead-ended at a muddy farm gate. “Brilliant, Dad’s turned us into off-roaders,” Ellie quipped from the back, as Max howled about missing his iPad charging time. A quick reverse and a sheepish sat-nav reset, and we were back on track, laughing about my legendary sense of direction. Classic family holiday start – insignificant mishap, maximum eye-rolls.

Pulling up to Spindle around 4pm felt like slipping into a hug. Tucked away in a peaceful spot just a stone’s throw from Witney’s buzz but surrounded by rolling fields, this wooden lodge is the epitome of that relaxed Oxfordshire escape. The owner, Sarah, greeted us with a wave from her car as she left – proper friendly, no faffing about with keys under mats or anything dodgy. She’d left fresh milk, biscuits, and a handwritten note saying, “Make yourselves at home, ducks.” We tumbled out, bags everywhere, and there it was: a smart, single-storey haven with a pitched roof, veranda wrapped around like a welcome mat, and those big windows promising views of the garden and beyond.

First impressions? Pure bliss. We stepped inside, and the open-plan living space hit us like a warm embrace – woodburner at the ready (logs stacked neatly outside), squishy sofas begging for a flop, and a kitchen that’s compact but kitted out with everything you’d need for a fry-up or pasta night. The kids immediately claimed the double bedroom with its en-suite, while Liz and I took the twin with zip-and-link beds – flexible for when Max inevitably crawls in at dawn. “This is better than our house!” Max declared, bouncing on the bed before I could unpack. Light streams in everywhere, making it feel airy despite the cosiness, and that faint scent of pine from the wooden accents? Heaven.

We didn’t waste time – straight out to the private hot tub on the veranda, steaming away under a clearing sky. The garden’s a riot of wildflowers and buzzing bees, with a couple of bird feeders dangling, already doing brisk trade with robins. Popping the prosecco Liz had stashed (clever woman), we sank in, jets rumbling like a gentle massage. Ellie spotted a pheasant strutting past the fence – “Look, it’s posher than us!” – and we all cracked up. Simple pleasures, innit? No itinerary, no rushing to tourist traps. Just us, bubbling away as the sun dipped, painting the fields gold.

Evening kicked off with chaos in the best way. I valiantly attempted fish fingers and chips – oven sorted, no hob drama – but managed to set off the smoke alarm testing the fire alarm. “Dad, you’re a liability,” Liz teased, wafting it with a tea towel while the kids danced around giggling. We ate at the dining table by the window, watching rabbits hop about, then settled for board games by lamplight. Spindle’s got that lodge life magic: woodburner crackling (we got it going eventually), fairy lights twinkling, and zero signal pressure – phones forgotten.

As I sat there later, nursing a tea and staring at the embers, a quiet moment hit me. Amid the kid-induced pandemonium and my daft wrong turns, there’s something profoundly grounding about places like this. Oxfordshire’s gentle hills, the hush of countryside nights – it nudges you to slow down, savour the ordinary. Ellie snoring softly, Max’s muddy wellies by the door, Liz curled up with a book. Yeah, this three-day jaunt’s already etching itself as one of those perfect family resets. Can’t wait for tomorrow’s explorations right here.
