About Oxfordshire
I’ll never forget the drive to Mill Pond Premier – our three-day jaunt to Oxfordshire started with classic British summer chaos. Picture this: me, behind the wheel of our trusty old Volvo, navigating the twisty B-roads from the M40 with my other half navigating via a phone that decided to throw a wobbly just as we hit the Oxfordshire countryside. “Turn left in 200 yards,” it chirped, then promptly lost signal. Cue me swearing under my breath as we overshot the turn for Wallingford by a good mile, ending up in a muddy layby near the Thames with the wipers battling a sudden downpour. Minor mishap, really – just enough to have us laughing hysterically as we U-turned, splattered in rain and arguing over whose fault it was (spoiler: mine, for trusting Siri over a proper map).

By the time we rolled into the quiet hamlet just outside Wallingford, the sun had peeked out, turning the puddles into sparkly mirrors. Mill Pond Premier sits right by a serene mill pond, and pulling up, it was love at first sight. This isn’t some cookie-cutter holiday let; it’s a proper gem of a detached cottage, all stone walls and roses clambering over the entrance, with the gentle lap of water just yards away. We parked on the gravel drive – crunching tyres like something out of a countryside ad – and tumbled out, bags in hand, still damp but buzzing.

The owners had left the key in a discreet box, with a handwritten note welcoming us and pointing out fresh milk and biscuits in the kitchen. Cheeky touch, that – I felt like we’d been invited to a mate’s for the weekend rather than checking into a rental. Flinging open the front door, we stepped into a cosy haven that screamed “relax here forever.” The living room was all plush sofas, a wood-burning stove (tempting even in summer), and those big sash windows framing the pond like a living painting. Ducks quacked their approval outside, and I swear, the air smelled of cut grass and possibility.

We dumped our bags and did the grand tour. Upstairs, the king-size bed in the master bedroom looked like a cloud had crash-landed – Egyptian cotton sheets, fluffy pillows, the works. The en-suite was spotless, with a rainfall shower that had me itching for a rinse-off after our soggy arrival. Downstairs, the kitchen was a dream for lazy holiday cooking: granite worktops, a fancy range cooker, and a larder stocked with tea (proper Yorkshire, none of that dusty stuff). The dining area opened onto a private patio, complete with bistro set and that unbeatable pond view – herons stalking fish, dragonflies darting about. It was so quintessentially Oxfordshire, I half-expected Beatrix Potter to pop out with a tray of scones.

First impressions? Blown away. After the drive’s farce, it felt like the universe was making up for it tenfold. We cracked open a bottle of local Chiltern Valley sparkling wine (nabbed from a farm shop en route), toasted our good fortune, and just sat there on the patio as the evening light turned the water golden. A cheeky robin hopped over, eyeing our crisps, and I chuckled, thinking how I’d have been gutted if we’d missed this due to one daft wrong turn.

Sitting there, gin in hand, I had a proper moment of reflection. Life’s been a whirlwind lately – work stress, endless to-do lists – and here I was, miles from it all, in this idyllic nook. Arriving in a flap made the peace hit harder; it’s funny how a bit of chaos sharpens the joy. Mill Pond Premier wasn’t just a stay; it was an instant reset button. If Oxfordshire’s your vibe – rolling fields, riverside walks to Wallingford’s ancient bridge just a stroll away – this place is pure magic. Can’t wait to go back.
