About Oxfordshire
I’ll never forget the drive to Lodge Cottage in Kingham – it was one of those classic British road trips that starts off promising and ends in a comedy of errors. I’d set off from London early on a drizzly Friday morning, sat-nav purring away, dreaming of rolling Cotswold hills and a cosy cottage escape. Oxfordshire’s A40 was its usual self: a gentle hum of HGVs and the odd caravan wobbling along, but by the time I hit the Chipping Norton turn-off, the heavens had properly opened. Rain lashing the windscreen like it had a personal grudge.

About five miles out from Kingham, disaster struck – or what felt like it in the moment. I’d stopped at a little layby near Shipton-under-Wychwood for a quick coffee from my thermos (pro tip: always pack one for these jaunts), and in my haste, I knocked the whole lot over inside the car. Scalding tea everywhere, soaking the passenger seat and turning my road atlas into a soggy mess. “Brilliant,” I muttered, mopping up with handfuls of service station napkins while swearing at the downpour that made it impossible to air things out. My three-day holiday was barely underway, and I already looked like I’d been mud-wrestling. Light relief? A cheeky pheasant strutted past the car window, eyeing me as if to say, “Amateur.”

By the time I finally trundled into Kingham village, I was late, frazzled, and questioning my life choices. Lodge Cottage sits tucked away on the edge of this postcard-perfect spot – think honey-stone cottages, a bubbling brook, and the sort of quiet that makes you realise how noisy the city really is. I parked on the gravel drive (crunching satisfyingly under the tyres), grabbed my drenched bags, and fumbled for the key safe. The rain had eased to a misty drizzle, and there it was: this darling chocolate-box cottage, all low-beamed charm and climbing roses still clinging on despite the autumn nip.

Stepping inside was like tumbling into a hug from an old friend. The sitting room hit me first – squashy sofas piled with cushions, a wood-burning stove begging for a match, and those mullioned windows framing views of the garden sloping down to meadows. I could practically hear the cows lowing in the distance. Kitchen next: proper country style, with a Rayburn cooker that looked like it could whip up a Sunday roast for twelve, and a Belfast sink perfect for washing up after a muddy ramble. I dumped my bags and brewed a fresh cuppa – no spillages this time – sinking into an armchair with a sigh. First impressions? Pure bliss after the road rage.

Wandering upstairs, I found the bedrooms snug as a bug: crisp white linens, exposed beams overhead, and little touches like fresh flowers on the dresser. The master had an en-suite that felt indulgent without being flashy – fluffy towels and a rainfall shower that washed away the last of my travel woes. Peeking out the window, Kingham’s high street was just a stroll away: the Plough Inn for a pint of local ale, or a potter to Daylesford for organic treats. But honestly, I didn’t budge that first evening. I lit the fire (managed not to set off the smoke alarm, hurrah), cracked open a bottle of red, and let the warmth seep in.

Looking back on that chaotic arrival, it was the perfect foil for what followed. There I was, a city slicker spilling tea and cursing the rain, yet Lodge Cottage wrapped me up in its timeless Oxfordshire magic from the off. It made me reflect – gently, mind – on how we rush about, missing the simple joys. Three days stretched ahead, but that first impression? It hooked me proper. If you’re after a bolthole that feels like home (but better), this is it. Kingham’s got me smitten already.
