About Oxfordshire
I’d barely made it out of London on that drizzly Friday morning when the sat-nav decided to have a little tantrum, directing me down a muddy farm track that wasn’t even on the map. “Recalculating,” it chirped cheerfully as I reversed out, splattered in Oxfordshire clay, laughing at my own daftness. But honestly, it was the perfect start to a weekend at Hazel, that cosy little lodge tucked away near Witney—my antidote to the daily grind. After an hour’s gentle drive through rolling fields and hedgerows, I pulled up to the place, and blimey, it was even better than the photos.

Stepping through the gate, I was hit by this immediate sense of calm. Hazel sits in a quiet spot on the edge of a peaceful holiday park, surrounded by its own private garden that feels like a secret hug from nature. The lodge itself is all warm wood and soft curves—think low-beamed ceilings, plush sofas begging you to sink in, and a wood-burning stove that hadn’t even been lit yet but promised evenings of pure bliss. I dumped my bag, kicked off my wellies, and just stood there in the open-plan living area, breathing it all in. No rush, no plans, just the joy of arriving somewhere that whispers, “Stay put, love.”

First impressions? It’s the kind of place that makes doing sod-all feel like the height of luxury. I brewed a cuppa in the compact kitchen—proper mugs, none of that polystyrene nonsense—and flopped onto the sofa with a book I’d been meaning to crack open for months. The garden view through the bifold doors was mesmerising: lush lawn, bird feeders twitching with finches, and flowerbeds bursting with late-summer colour. I spent that first afternoon wandering out there barefoot, lounging on the wooden bench with nothing but the hum of bees and distant sheep bleating. It was pure idleness, and I loved every lazy second. Who needs an itinerary when you’ve got a spot like this?

Saturday dawned misty, but by mid-morning the sun had burned it off, turning the garden into a suntrap. I pottered about, picking a few ripe tomatoes from the veggie patch (a cheeky bonus I hadn’t expected), then retreated to the decking with toast and more reading. The lodge’s deck is genius—partly covered, so you can chill even if it spits with rain, which it did later, pattering softly like a lullaby. I watched it all from my wicker chair, feeling that rare luxury of time stretching out. No emails pinging, no deadlines lurking. Just me, a ham sandwich made from local bread I’d nipped out for, and the simple pleasure of watching clouds scoot by.

Venturing out was minimal, mind—just a slow amble to the park’s little shop for milk and a chat with the friendly warden about the best pub nearby. That evening, I strolled less than a mile to a proper country boozer in Witney’s outskirts, all low lights and roaring fire, nursing a pint of bitter while scribbling notes on a napkin. Back at Hazel, I finally lit that stove, cracked open a bottle of red, and sprawled by its glow with my book. The flames danced, the garden darkened to velvet, and I thought, isn’t this it? That quiet joy of slowing right down.

By Sunday morning, as I sipped coffee on the deck watching dew sparkle, I had a gentle moment of reflection. Life back home rushes like the Thames in flood, but here at Hazel, time had tiptoed. I’d done bugger all—read, dozed, gazed—and felt more alive for it. First impressions don’t get much better: a haven for recharging the soul, one lazy breath at a time. I’m already plotting a return.
