About New Forest
Pulling up to Signature Lodge 2 felt like stumbling into a hug from an old mate. Tucked away in a peaceful spot near the edge of the forest, it's one of those hot tub lodges that screams "relax, you've earned this." The place is compact but cosy—think wooden beams, a cracking little patio, and that bubbling hot tub waiting like a promise of bliss. First impressions? Spot on. The key safe was easy to find, and stepping inside, I was hit with that fresh, piney scent you only get in proper countryside spots. I dumped my bags, cracked open a cold one from the fridge, and just stood there grinning at the view: rolling green lawns leading to the treeline, with New Forest ponies probably ambling by any minute. Day one was all about shaking off the city dust with a hike. The weather was playing nice—crisp autumn blue skies, perfect for lacing up my boots and heading out from the lodge door. A quick five-minute wander took me into the forest proper, where the paths twist through ancient oaks and heathland. I followed the easy trail towards Boldrewood, spotting a few donkeys eyeing me like I was the intruder. Light-hearted humour kicked in when I nearly tripped over a hidden pony dropping—classic New Forest welcome, innit? Two hours in, legs buzzing, I felt that rare buzz of being properly unplugged. Back at the lodge, the hot tub was calling; sinking in with a cuppa as the sun dipped was pure magic. But oh, British weather—never a dull moment. Come morning two, the forecast lied through its teeth. I'd planned a longer loop around the local woodlands, maybe looping back via Hatchet Pond, but grey skies rolled in like uninvited guests, followed by a proper downpour. No bother, I thought, grabbing my waterproofs for an "adventurous" twist. The rain turned the paths into a muddy slip 'n' slide—hilarious in hindsight, mortifying at the time. I squelched along what felt like a riverbed trail near the lodge, dodging puddles the size of small lakes, while the wind whipped my hood into a sail. One moment, I'm marvelling at the wildflowers peeking through the bracken; the next, I'm clinging to a tree as a gust threatens to send me flying. Changed plans? Absolutely. Instead of a full afternoon hike, I pivoted to a shorter, sheltered ramble along the wooded edges, where the canopy kept the worst at bay. Ponies huddled under the trees, looking as fed up as me, which had me chuckling through chattering teeth. By evening, the clouds parted just enough for a sunset stroll right from the patio—pure serendipity. Sat there with fish and chips from a local spot, steaming in the chill, I had one of those gentle self-reflective moments. Here I was, mud-splattered and windswept, but buzzing from the rawness of it all. City life doesn't throw curveballs like this; it just grinds you down predictably. Signature Lodge 2 nailed those first impressions—intimate, immersive, and a cracking base for letting the New Forest's whims dictate your days. Three days in, and I was already plotting a return, pheasants permitting. |
