About New Forest
Unpacking was a breeze, but hunger struck hard after that drive. I nipped out to the nearby Lymington market—it's just a short stroll, and on a good day, it's buzzing with stalls groaning under local cheeses, fresh veg, and those fat, juicy sausages from New Forest porkers. I loaded up on smoked cheddar, crusty bread, a punnet of strawberries still warm from the sun, and some venison steaks that looked like they'd wandered off the heath themselves. Back at the lodge, I fired up the hob for my grand arrival feast. Ambition got the better of me; I tried pan-frying the venison with a splash of red wine from the offy and some wild garlic I'd spotted en route. Result? Medium-rare triumph on one side, a tad charred on the other. Laughed my socks off at my amateur cheffing—served it with buttered new potatoes and a salad, scoffing the lot on the patio as ponies ambled past in the distance. Proper Forest vibes, that. Evening called for a pub crawl, starting with the local in Pennington. The Fleur de Lys is a cracker—beams low enough to duck, and a beer garden where you can watch the world go by. I went for a pint of Ringwood ale (fortnight, that stuff's brewed right here in the Forest) and their pie of the day: steak and ale, flaky pastry, gravy so rich it could renovate your soul. Chatted with a couple of locals about the best spots for foraging mushrooms—turns out the woods are full of 'em, but don't go eating random fungi unless you fancy a hospital dash. Light belly laughs over that one. Back at Select Lodge by nine, I cracked open a cheeky bottle of New Forest cider from the market, paired it with the leftover cheese and some pickled onions. The lodge's lounge, with its squishy sofas and wood burner (unlit, mind, as it was balmy), felt like slipping into a hug. First night in, and I was already plotting tomorrow's eats. Day two kicked off with brekkie experiments in that brilliant kitchen—proper Aga vibes without the faff. I'd snagged eggs from a farm stall nearby, bacon from rare-breed pigs, and tomatoes so red they blushed. Scrambled eggs on toast, with a side of black pudding that was smoky heaven. Fuelled up, I wandered back to Lymington's high street for more provisions: artisan bread from the bakery, crab claws from the fishmonger (fresh off the Solent boats), and a slab of fudge that didn't make it home. Lunch was a messy triumph—crab salad with mayo, lemon, and chunks of that bread, eaten at the garden table while birds tweeted approval. Afternoon slump? Sorted with a visit to the Hare and Hounds pub, mere minutes away. Fish and chips there are legendary—cod in crisp batter, chips fat as fingers, mushy peas on the side. I nursed a shandy, watching families spill out into the beer garden, feeling a proper twit for not booking ahead. By evening, self-reflection mode hit over a solo curry attempt. Market spices, chicken thighs, and coconut milk turned into a korma that was more soup than sauce—lesson learned: measure, don't eyeball. Still, scoffed with naan from the freezer drawer, it warmed the cockles. That first full day at Select Lodge Plus 3 had me pondering how daft it is rushing through life back home, when three days of pub grub, market hauls, and kitchen cock-ups could reset the soul. New Forest nosh, innit? Pure bliss from the off. |
