About New Forest
Finally, after that insignificant pony debacle, we trundled into the drive of Select Lodge Plus 3 WF, just on the edge of Lymington and Pennington. First impressions? Blimey, it was love at first sight. This isn’t some cookie-cutter holiday let; it’s a cosy, characterful cottage that feels like it’s been plucked from a storybook. The garden’s a riot of wildflowers and those quintessential New Forest ponies grazing just beyond the fence – close enough to pat, but not so close they nick your picnic. We piled out of the car, bags tumbling everywhere, and the fresh air hit us like a tonic. Inside, it’s all homely charm: a wood-burner begging for a evening fire (we didn’t light it on day one, mind, too busy unpacking), a kitchen stocked with everything you’d need for a fry-up, and bedrooms that scream “sleep like a log.” The plus three bedrooms meant we weren’t tripping over each other, which is a win with two teens and a cheeky dog in tow. But the real magic of our three-day jaunt? Stumbling on the New Forest’s hidden gems purely by accident. We’d planned a gentle wander from the lodge, figuring we’d stick to the nearby paths around Pennington Marshes – you know, the sort of off-the-beaten-track spot locals whisper about. No tourist traps for us; we wanted that quiet thrill of getting lost. Barely five minutes from the door, we veered off the main track onto a barely-there footpath, the kind that’s more bramble than path. “Dad, this is mental,” my son grumbled, but then – jackpot. We emerged at a secret creek where the Solent’s tide laps right up to reed-fringed shallows. No signs, no crowds, just us, a pair of oystercatchers piping away, and the sun glinting off the water like it was showing off. We picnicked there on the grass, feet dangling in the cool shallows, watching boats bob in the distance. Pure bliss, the sort of find you can’t map. Day two, same vibe. Aiming for a quick loop back to Lymington’s marina – it’s only a couple of miles, dead easy – we took a wrong turn (my navigational prowess strikes again) and ended up deep in Normandy Lane’s ancient woods. Hidden gem alert: a forgotten dew pond, tucked away where oaks twist like old wizards. We sprawled out, listening to the rustle of fallow deer in the undergrowth, munching pasties from a nearby farm shop we’d spotted en route. The air smelled of pine and earth, and for a moment, I had that gentle pang of self-reflection – when did life get so rushed? Here, accidentally off-grid, time slowed right down. No signal, no rush; just the joy of being properly unplugged. By day three’s arrival-back-home haze (we’d looped to nearby Keyhaven Marshes by mistake, discovering a bird hide overlooking tidal salt flats alive with lapwings), Select Lodge had worked its spell. Those first impressions lingered: the pony welcome, the cosy nook, and the sheer delight of the Forest’s secret corners revealing themselves when you dare to get lost. If you’re after a New Forest stay that trades itineraries for serendipity, this is your spot. We’re already plotting a return – sat-nav be damned. |
