About New Forest
The sat-nav, bless it, guided me through those narrow, hedge-lined lanes towards Lymington, where the lodge is tucked away in a peaceful spot. New Forest roads are no place for the faint-hearted – ponies ambling across like they own the place, which they sort of do. I nearly clipped a free-roaming donkey near Brockenhurst, slamming on the brakes with a yelp that probably echoed through the woods. Heart racing, I arrived at the property just as the sun peeked out, turning the thatched roofs and flower-filled gardens golden. Select Lodge Plus 3 Bunks is one of those classic New Forest cottages that looks like it's straight out of a postcard – cosy, characterful, and screaming "put your feet up." Fumbling with the key safe (my hands still shaky from the donkey dodge), I let myself in, dropping my bags in the hallway amid a flurry of excitement. First impressions? Absolute delight. The living room opened up with a wood-burning stove begging for a fire, comfy sofas piled with cushions, and big windows framing the garden where wildflowers nodded in the breeze. I could hear birdsong and the distant clip-clop of hooves – proper Forest magic. The kitchen was a dream for a self-caterer like me: granite worktops, a proper Aga vibe with an electric cooker, and all the gadgets you'd need to whip up a fry-up. I chuckled to myself, imagining the chaos if I'd brought mates – those three bunk beds upstairs would've been a riot for kids or hungover adults. Wandering the rooms, I hit that gentle moment of self-reflection. Here I was, solo on this three-day jaunt, after months of office grind and forgetting to breathe. The mishap with the charger felt trivial now; life's too short for that stress, right? The master bedroom was pure bliss – king-sized bed with fluffy pillows, en-suite shower steaming up nicely as I freshened up. Those bunks in the twin room? Compact but cute, perfect for a family splash-out. Outside, the private patio called to me with its table and chairs, overlooking shared gardens buzzing with butterflies. I cracked open a beer from the cool box, toasting the ponies grazing nearby, and thought, "This is it – proper escape." That first afternoon, I didn't venture far – just a short stroll to nearby Pennington Marshes, less than a mile away, where the Solent views hit like a tonic. Sea air, lapwings wheeling overhead, and not a soul in sight. Back at the lodge, I rustled up pasta with those cheeses, the aroma filling the air as dusk fell. The chaos of arrival melted into this warm glow of contentment. Select Lodge Plus 3 Bunks isn't flashy; it's honest New Forest charm – close to Lymington's high street for a cheeky ice cream or pasty, yet worlds away from the hustle. If you're after first impressions that stick, this place delivers. Can't wait to return, charger or no charger. |
