About New Forest
Pulling up to Select Lodge Plus 2 felt like stumbling into a hug from an old mate. Tucked away in a quiet spot near Lymington and Pennington, it's one of those cosy dog-friendly cottages that screams "proper New Forest getaway." The place is compact but spot-on—two bedrooms, a snug lounge with a wood burner (not lit yet, but promising), and a kitchen kitted out enough for brewing a decent cuppa. The garden's a belter, fenced and wildflower-strewn, perfect for letting the dog off the lead without him legging it into the woods. First impressions? Bliss. I dumped my bags, cracked open a biscuit from the welcome pack, and stepped out for a nose around. The air smelled of pine and damp earth, that classic New Forest whiff that hits you right in the nostalgia. Day one, the weather was playing nice—bright blue skies, not a cloud in sight. I laced up my boots and headed out for a gentle hike along the nearby Pennington Marshes. It's only a couple of miles from the lodge, flat paths winding through salt marshes where the New Forest ponies graze lazily, flicking their tails at flies. I reckon I clocked five miles round trip, spotting herons stabbing at the shallows and a few cheeky donkeys eyeing my sandwich. The sun warmed my face, and I felt like I'd hacked the holiday code: no crowds, just me, the mud, and the odd low-flying buzzard. Back at the lodge by teatime, I fired up the barbecue in the garden—sausages sizzling, dog begging shamelessly. Pure joy. But oh, British weather, you capricious sod. Come morning two, the forecast had lied through its teeth. Grey skies rolled in overnight, and by brekkie, it was chucking it down—proper stair rods bouncing off the patio. My grand plan for a longer ramble into the ancient woodlands near Boldre? Scrubbed. Instead, I adapted like a true Brit: grabbed my waterproofs and embraced the mizzle. A short stomp from the lodge takes you to cracking paths around Keyhaven Marshes, where the rain turned the trails into a slip-and-slide. I laughed out loud slipping arse-over-tit on a muddy patch—classic me, always the pratfall king. The weather flipped the script brilliantly: what started as a soggy plod became magical. Mist shrouded the salt flats, turning egrets into ghosts, and the rain drumming on my hood drowned out the world. I sheltered under a gnarled oak, sipping flask coffee, pondering how these unplanned detours are often the best bits. Why rush through sunshine when a downpour forces you to slow down and really breathe it in? By afternoon, the clouds parted just enough for another local loop—back towards the marshes, chasing rainbows over the Solent. The lodge was my rainy-day haven: drying socks by the radiator, a pot of tea steaming, and that wood burner crackling away. First impressions sealed it—Select Lodge Plus 2 isn't just a base; it's the heartbeat of a New Forest walking adventure, weather and all. Those three days taught me something daft but true: sometimes the best holidays are the ones where you let the rain rewrite the map. Can't wait to go back. |
